A machine for continuously punching, shearing and forming sheet material comprises a frame and punching, shearing, and forming stations. Rollers are provided for continuously feeding sheet material through the stations. A cam periodically engages the tools of the respective punching and shearing stations to actuate the respective punching and shearing operations and simultaneously to advance the respective punching and shearing stations in unison with the direction of feed of the sheet material. The forming station includes adjustable rollers which permit adjustment of the space between the rollers. The method of the present invention comprises continuously feeding the sheet material through the punching, shearing, and forming stations. At the punching and shearing stations, the tools for punching and shearing the sheet material move in unison with the sheet material during the time that they are performing their punching and shearing operations, respectively.

A double bucket die cutting assembly is provided which is particularly adaped to be installed at the die cutting station of a press for purposes primarily of accomplishing a punching operation thereat upon a moving web of material passing thereby. The double bucket die cutting assembly includes a frame structure in which a pair of buckets are mounted for eccentric rotation about a drive axis in suitably spaced relation relative to each other whereby to permit the material, upon which it is desired to perform a punching operation, to be passed therebetween. One of the buckets is provided with punch means suitably supported thereon so as to lie in a common plane extending the length of the major axis thereof. The other of the buckets is provided with receiving means operable to permit the punch means to be received therein as the punch means is brought into juxtaposed relation therewith during the rotation of the pair of buckets. The frame structure further includes counterbalancing means comprising a pair of weighted rollers which are supported in the frame structure for rotation relative thereto. Each of the rollers is provided with an irregular distribution of the weight thereof about its axis of rotation so that the heavy portion of the weighted rollers will be disposed to the opposite side of the center line from the buckets thereby providing a counterbalancing force to the weight of the buckets during the rotation of the latter. Alignment means are provided cooperatively associated with each of the pair of buckets so as to ensure that proper alignment between the pair of buckets is maintained during the rotation thereof. The frame structure also serves as a support for a drive means which is operable to drive each of the pair of buckets and each of the pair of weighted rollers so that they rotate in a predetermined fashion whereby to ensure that the pair of weighted rollers accomplish their intended counterbalancing function relative to the pair of buckets.

A rotary stamper includes an upper die plate assembly, a lower die plate assembly, and a support frame having a drive assembly that moves the upper die plate horizontally and vertically along a generally circular pathway while moving the lower die plate along a linear horizontal pathway. The upper die plate is vertically slidably connected to the lower die plate by way of one or more vertical rods that extend from the lower die plate assembly up through the upper die plate. In operation, the lower die plate matches the horizontal movements of the upper die plate as the latter is moved along its circular pathway. Concurrently, the upper die plate moves towards and away from the lower die plate. This maintains a substantially constant alignment between the die plates for carrying out a periodic machining operation on a moving web of material passing there between.

A sliding block with a female die acts in conjunction with a four bar linkage mounted block with a male die to punch indexing holes in a moving metal strip. The block with male die continually seeks to rotate, but is held in position by the sliding block. The sliding block is programmed to periodically move forward at the speed of the moving metal strip and to return to starting position. This frees the male die to rotate to punch out the hole, and to continue to rotate back into the starting position to be held by the returned sliding block.

Punching apparatus, preferably for metal strip, comprises at least two pairs of shafts rotatably mounted in a framework wherein the pairs are spaced apart along a feed path and the shafts of each pair are spaced apart one on each side of this path. Each shaft carries an eccentric with the eccentrics on the same side of the feedpath being similarly orientated and the eccentrics of each pair of shafts being orientated 180.degree. apart. A beam is mounted on each side of the feedpath on the corresponding eccentrics and parallel to the path and at least one punch is mounted on one beam extending towards the other beam which carries a complementary die. Means are included for holding and moving a metal strip along the feed path and also for rotating the shafts in unison but such that the shafts on opposite sides of the feedpath rotate in opposite directions.
