A tundish impact pad, a tundish containing the same, and a method of using and assembly containing the impact pad and tundish are provided. The tundish impact pad features a base having a base surface with a conical impact surface area establishing an apex, a sidewall, and a top wall extending inwardly relative to the sidewall to terminate at an inner edge establishing a mouth opening spaced above and centered relative to the apex. The top wall includes a lip sloping radially inwardly and downwardly towards the conical impact surface.

In exemplary implementations of this invention, an actuated fabricator deposits structural elements (e.g., tensile structural elements) in a 3D pattern over large displacements. The fabricator is supported by at least three elongated support members. It includes onboard actuators that translate the fabricator relative to the ends of the support members. The fabricator is configured, by actuating different translations along different support members, to translate itself throughout a 3D volume. In some implementations, each of the actuators use fusible material to fuse metal tapes together, edge-to-edge, to form a hollow structure that can be shortened or lengthened.

A pulling-up-type continuous casting method according to an aspect of the present invention includes disposing a shape defining member (102) above a molten-metal surface of molten metal (M1) held in a holding furnace (101), the shape defining member (102) being configured to define a cross-sectional shape of a cast-metal article (M3) to be cast, submerging a starter (ST) into the molten metal (M1) while making the starter (ST) pass through the shape defining member (102), and pulling up the molten metal (M1) by pulling up the starter (ST) while making the molten metal (M1) pass through the shape defining member (102) after a temperature of the shape defining member (102) reaches a predetermined reference temperature. The reference temperature is equal to or higher than a solidification completion temperature of the molten metal (M1).

A pulling-up-type continuous casting apparatus includes a holding furnace that holds molten metal, a shape defining member disposed above a surface of the molten metal held in the holding furnace, and configured to define a cross-sectional shape of a cast-metal article as the molten metal passes through it, an image pickup unit that takes an image of the molten metal that has passed through the shape defining member, an image analysis unit that detects a fluctuation on the molten metal from the image and determines a solidification interface based on presence/absence of the fluctuation, and a casting control unit that changes a casting condition only when the solidification interface determined by the image analysis unit is not within a predetermined reference range. The casting control unit uses a reference range which differs according to the pulling-up angle of the molten metal.

An up-drawing continuous casting apparatus according to one aspect of the invention includes a molten metal holding furnace that holds molten metal; a shape determining member that is arranged near a molten metal surface of the molten metal held in the molten metal holding furnace, and that determines a sectional shape of a cast casting by the molten metal passing through the shape determining member, the shape determining member including a pattern provided on an upper surface of the shape determining member; an imaging portion configured to capture an image of the pattern that is reflected onto both retained molten metal that has passed through the shape determining member, and the casting formed by the retained molten metal solidifying; an image analyzing portion configured to determine a solidification interface from the image; and a casting controlling portion configured to change a casting condition.

A pulling-up-type continuous casting method according to an aspect of the present disclosure is a pulling-up-type continuous casing method for pulling up molten metal held in a holding furnace by using a starter. When the starter is accelerated to a predetermined pulling-up speed at a start of casting, the pulling-up-type continuous casting method includes a first acceleration section in which the starter is accelerated from a standstill state to a first speed at a first acceleration, a second acceleration section in which the starter is accelerated from the first speed to a second speed at a second acceleration, and a constant speed section in which the starter is pulled up at the first speed, the constant speed section being positioned between the first and second acceleration sections.

A free casting method according to the present invention includes, a lead-out step for leading out molten metal from a lead-out area (P) provided in a source of supply, e.g. a surface level of the molten metal, to retain the molten metal temporarily by surface films (F) generated on an outer surface, and a forming step for obtaining a formed body by solidifying retained molten metal (MS) led out along a set passage (L1) depending on a desired casting shape, wherein the retained molten metal is solidified after being formed into the desired casting shape by applying an external force thereto at positions between an unrestrained root portion of the retained molten metal in vicinity of the surface level of the molten metal and a solidification interface defined as a boundary between the retained molten metal and the formed body in the forming step.

Embodiments herein relate to a method for forming a bulk solidifying amorphous alloy sheets have different surface finish including a “fire” polish surface like that of a float glass. In one embodiment, a first molten metal alloy is poured on a second molten metal of higher density in a float chamber to form a sheet of the first molten that floats on the second molten metal and cooled to form a bulk solidifying amorphous alloy sheet. In another embodiment, a molten metal is poured on a conveyor conveying the sheet of the first molten metal on a conveyor and cooled to form a bulk solidifying amorphous alloy sheet. The cooling rate such that a time-temperature profile during the cooling does not traverse through a region bounding a crystalline region of the metal alloy in a time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagram.

Embodiments of this apparatus and method introduce solutes into a sheet formed from a melt. A melt of a material is cooled and a sheet of the material is formed in the melt. A first fluid is introduced around the sheet at least partially while the sheet is formed. A second fluid also may be introduced. In one instance, use of the first fluid and second fluid may form a sheet that has two different solute concentrations.
