Regulation of the throughflow of metal melt is provided through a bottom nozzle of a metallurgical vessel having an upper nozzle arranged in the floor of the metallurgical vessel and a lower nozzle arranged below the upper nozzle. At least one inert gas inlet aperture is provided to the melt throughflow aperture, and a sensor is arranged on or in the lower nozzle for determining the layer thickness of metal clogging in the nozzle. The inert gas supply into the bottom nozzle is regulated using measurement signals of the sensor. A bottom nozzle for the metallurgical vessel is provided with a wall of the melt throughflow aperture through the nozzles being formed at least sealed against metal melt and the nozzles being at least partially surrounded by a gas-tight housing. The housing at its lower end encloses the lower nozzle at its periphery in a gas-tight manner and is arranged with a portion of its inner side abutting on the outer side of the nozzle. A thermally insulating solid is arranged between the wall of the melt throughflow aperture and the housing.

The groove surrounds the molten metal orifice in the plate. The base of the groove has a porous refractory insert connected to a source of nonoxidizing gas under pressure to provide a nonoxidizing gas seal all around the molten metal orifices in the slide gate valve and to prevent the aspiration of air into the molten metal orifices during discharge of the molten metal from the ladle or tundish.

An operating mechanism for slidable gates which are used to control flow of liquid from a bottom-pour vessel, and a flowcontrolling method. The mechanism is particularly useful for controlling teeming of liquid steel from a tundish into a continuous-casting mold. Most slidable gates either fully open or fully close the outlet of a vessel. The present invention enables the outlet to be partially open, whereby the stream discharging therefrom can be throttled. The mechanism includes a main drive for pushing gates from a ready position to a slow-motion region under the vessel outlet. The slow-motion region of an orifice gate extends at least from a position in which the vessel outlet is partially open to a position in which it is fully open. An opposed auxiliary drive serves to retard movement of a gate as soon as it reaches the slow-motion region. Thereafter, the main drive pushes an orifice gate slowly annd under close control to any desired teeming position within the slow-motion region. The mechanism also includes an improved arrangement for conducting gases to the nozzle at the vessel outlet to prevent skulls from forming, and an improved attaching mechanism for attaching a pouring tube to its holder.

A method of and apparatus for handling liquid steel in a tundish preparatory to teeming the steel into a continuous casting mold. Initially the tundish outlet is closed with a slidable gate which has a porous plug aligned with the outlet. Inert gas is injected into the steel through this plug to agitate the steel in the region of the tundish outlet. Inert gas injection is terminated shortly before the commencement of teeming, and oxygen rich gas is injected to react exothermically with the steel in the nozzle well area. Thereafter the porous plug slidable gate is replaced with a conventional gate having a teeming opening.
