The invention relates to a tool head for machine-tools comprising a base body (10) rotatable around an axis of rotation (13), a slider (14) which bears a cutting tool and is adjustable with respect to the base body (10) along an axis of displacement (16) oriented radially with respect to the rotation axis (13) with the aid of a drive mechanism and at least one balancing body (20) for damping the unbalance caused by the slider (14). The aim of said invention is to damp the unbalance and to reduce operating forces. For this purpose, at least two balancing body (20) whose center of gravity (28′, 28″) is offset on the side of the axis of displacement (16) are guidable and/or pivotable with respect to the slider and the base body at points remote from each other.

The slide is arranged to slide on a spindle insert at guiding members containing guiding or guide surfaces which slide in pairs upon each other. To positively retain the slide on the spindle insert springs are arranged in such a manner and with a pre-bias such that the guiding surfaces are pressed against each other. Also, structure is provided to interrupt, when desired, the transmission of the pre-bias to the guiding surfaces.

The apparatus has a drive hub with a fixing pin and driving flange. A cross slide carrying a tool is displaceably guided in the flange. Displacement takes place by a guidance roller, which fits into a guidance groove of a planetary web of a planetary gear constructed as a cam plate. Together with a further similar planetary gear, the first planetary gear forms a planetary power split transmission, on which is superimposed the rotary movement of an annular motor. As a result of the rotary movement of the cam plate with the guidance groove the displacement of the cross slide is brought about. Using an envelope drive, the rotary movement of the motor is transferred to a tachoalternator with a pulse generator. The pulses of the pulse generator are processed in a processor, which controls the motor and therefore the displacement movement of the cross slide. Compared with known apparatuses, the apparatus is characterized in that the motor housed in annular manner in the casing and the transmission constitute an independent unit requiring no additional drive parts outside the apparatus.

A rotating machine tool for hydraulically positioning a cutting tool mounting assembly lateral to the axis of rotation is disclosed. A collar circumscribing the axis of rotation and having an inclined annular downwardly directed recess is slidably mounted on the machine tool. A pair of diametrically opposed plungers ride within the inclined recess and are forced into reciprocal movement thereby. The reciprocating plungers pump hydraulic fluid from a reservoir within the machine tool into a pressure chamber. The pressure chamber is connected to a piston and cylinder assembly, which piston is positionally responsive to the pressure within the chamber. The movement of the piston is translated into lateral movement of the cutting tool via a spring biased mounting assembly. In operation, the rotation of the collar is restrained while the body of the machine tool rotates. The difference in rotation rate between the collar and the body causes the plungers within the body to ride upon the inclined annular recess and induces pumping of the hydraulic fluid. The hydraulic fluid is pumped into the pressure chamber and an increase in pressure therein causes the mounting assembly to be displaced. Actuation of a relief valve connected to the pressure chamber permits the mounting assembly to return to its initial position in response to the force exerted by the bias springs. The inclined annular recess may be mated with a mirror image positionable swash plate to provide selectively variable maximum vertical movement to the plungers to vary the rate of pumping. Hydraulically operated cutting tool attachments connectable to a hydraulic fluid takeoff on the assembly are also described.

A cutting head assembly especially suited for use on lathes or boring mills for performing facing operations. The cutting head assembly includes a tool carrier in the form of a generally cylindrical body adapted to be mounted on the end face of a conventional spindle with its axis aligned with the axis of rotation of the spindle. A pair of cutters are mounted on slide members carried in a slideway formed transversely in the outer end face of the body. The slides are arranged for movement along parallel chordal lines equally spaced from the axis of the body and are interconnected through rack gears and a pinion gear so that they move simultaneously an equal amount in opposite directions. Hydraulic piston units are carried in the body and are connected with the slides to drive them transversely of the body to move the cutters across the outer end face to perform the required cutting during rotation of the body about its axis.
