Abstract:
A bore finishing tool has an arbor with a tapered outer circumferential surface and a sleeve over the arbor having a tapered inner circumferential surface cooperatively disposed in surface to surface overlaying relation to at least a substantial portion of the tapered outer circumferential surface of the arbor. The sleeve is adjustably movable relative to the arbor for expanding a diametrical extent of the sleeve and has a plurality of internal material relief features at circumferentially spaced locations in the tapered inner circumferential surface extending partially through the sleeve so as to reduce a level of force required for expanding the diametrical extent of the sleeve. Exemplary material relief features include flutes and fractures. The sleeve can also include an external retraction feature enabling application of a retraction force by an external device for reducing the diametrical extent.
Abstract:
A smoothing/polishing tool (10) of the type including a hollow cylindrical body (1), a plurality of expansion sectors (4) for a plurality of abrasives (6) integrally mounted on the external surface of an elastic bushing (7), fit on the expansion sectors (4). The tool (10) includes at least one key (11) insertable in one or more cavities (12) or notches obtained along one or more sectors (4); the key (11) bears one or more teeth (11A) adapted to interfere and be engaged with corresponding one or more holes or slits (13) obtained on the bushing (7); following the rotation of the smoothing/polishing tool (10), the key (11) drives the bushing (7) in rotation and at the same time supports the radial motion of the bushing during expansion.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for machining of bores in workpieces is described, where a honing tool, covered with an abrasive material coating and radially pressed against the wall of the bore, simultaneously performs a rotational motion and an axial reciprocal motion. In addition to the reciprocal and rotational motions, the honing tool performs a high-frequency, short-stroke self-oscillation, which is excited by ultrasonic oscillation in the range of 16 to 40 kHz.
Abstract:
A lap for lapping the surfaces of holes having a diameter of at least about one inch, comprising a lapping cylinder having a plurality of segments thereon each having a lapping surface on the outside thereof and a bearing surface of essentially line contact on the inside thereof, a shank secured to the cylinder and threadedly supporting an adjusting screw that in turn rotatably supports an adjusting collar, the adjusting collar having a conical surface engaging the bearing surfaces on the segments for adjusting the positions of the segments laterally with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder; both a barrel and a blind-hole lap are disclosed.
