In the bite-by-bite cutting of a length of sheet material split points for pattern pieces extending between adjacent bites are assigned to bite overlap regions containing sheet material capable of being cut at the cutting station either before or after a given advancement. A method is further given for optimally locating the split points within the bite overlap regions so as to best avoid problems caused by slit notches, V-notches, sharp corners or other discontinuities located close to the split points.

Apparatus for cutting patterns from successive contiguous segments of an elongated layup of sheet material has a zoned vacuum table which includes an endless bristle mat conveyor, for shifting a layup along the table to position a segment of the layup in the cutting zone of the table and for holding the layup segment in the cutting zone, and a carriage assembly, which moves a cutting mechanism relative to the table and in cutting engagement with the segment to cut patterns from the segment in response to signals from a programmable controller. A rotary encoder mounted on the carriage assembly has a pinion which engages a rack carried by the conveyor to detect movement of the carriage assembly relative to the conveyor when the carriage assembly returns to its starting position after completing its cutting cycle. A responsive circuit connects the encoder to the conveyor drive motor and energizes the drive motor in response to the relative movement detected by the encoder to cause the conveyor to move the layup in the return direction and through a distance equal to the distance traversed by the carriage assembly in returning to its starting position whereby the next successive segment of the layup is accurately positioned in the cutting zone. An error sensing circuit detects the magnitude and direction of an error in positioning the layup and alters the data in the controller to nullify the error. A vacuum device cleans the bristle mat while the conveyor is in motion and also reduces the vacuum holddown force applied to the layup while it is being shifted by the conveyor.

In a machine and method for automatically cutting a length of sheet work material segment-by-segment to separate two dimensionally shaped pieces from it, registration between lines cut in adjacent segments is enhanced by the use of X and Y coordinate sensors carried by the X beam of the machine and having X and Y wheels respectively rotatably engaging the top surface of the work material to detect displacement changes between the X beam and the work material in the X and Y coordinate directions which detections are used to slave the advancement of the X beam to the advancement of the work material and to provide X and Y coordinate offset adjustments to the X and Y sets of control signals used to drive the cutter head in the X and Y coordinate directions during the cutting of the next segment of the work material.

In a method and apparatus for cutting either a single sheet or a lay-up of sheets of material to derive pattern pieces or the like from the material, the material is cut segment-by-segment by bringing a fresh segment to a cutting station after a preceding segment has been entirely cut. Discontinuities, which may translate into points of non-clean cutting, which might otherwise occur in cut lines as they pass to one segment to another, because of accidental shifting or mispositioning of the material during advancement, are avoided or reduced by acquiring the start and finish X and Y coordinates of an index point on the material and then using such coordinates with the cutting instructions used in the cutting of the subsequent segment, the use of the coordinates being such that accidental shifting or mispositioning of the material is taken into account and compensated for in the cutting of the second segment.
