There is provided a slide fastener and a method for manufacturing a slide fastener. A slide fastener is provided with: a pair of fastener tapes; a pair of fastener element rows provided respectively on the opposing tape-side edges of the pair of fastener tapes and having a plurality of fastener elements; and a slider configured to engage and disengage the pair of fastener element rows with and from each other. Each of the fastener element rows is composed of a monofilament which is made of synthetic resin. The monofilament has, on the surface thereof, a surface layer which can be colored with dyes. A roughened surface having a number of concaves is formed on the surfaces of the surface layer.

Slide fastener coupling elements are continuously manufactured from a molded strip of coupling element blanks at a speed which is substantially the same as the speed at which the molded strip is produced on a die wheel. The strip of coupling element blanks, as it is withdrawn from the die wheel, is folded about its longitudinal axis into a U-shape while the strip is being heated, and then is heated by hot air before it is shaped into slide fastener coupling elements of a finalized shape as they are heat-set. Then, the coupling elements thus formed are cooled and discharged at a speed equal to the peripheral speed of the die wheel.

A method for manufacturing part of a slide fastener includes the steps of deforming an initially substantially straight filament portion into a filament portion of V-shaped configuration having a pair of legs which meets at a crest of the deformed portion of V-shaped configuration. Simultaneously the deformed V-shaped portion of the filament is compressed at its crest to form a tooth of the slide fastener at this crest of the V-shaped portion. Immediately thereafter the legs of the V-shaped portion are pushed together while situating them in side-by-side relation and while displacing these legs into a tooth gap between a pair of teeth of a rotary gear.

In a known process and apparatus for the production of a continuous row of linking components for a slide fastener, using a plastics thread, the plastics thread is shaped into a spiral over and between a series of studs by means of a thread guide. One of the ends of each whorl of the spiral is crushed by means of a punch to form a linking component, whilst holding the corresponding whorl between the studs. The invention provides the improvement in that, on the crushing-point side of each whorl, the corresponding portion of the thread is stretched out rectilinearly beyond the crushing point and facing the corresponding side face of the thread guide. The required point of the thread is then crushed against the thread guide, which is used as an anvil, the punch used being independent of the other working tools, and the folding back of the corresponding portion of the thread being performed only after the crushing has been carried out.

Each half of a slide fastener having two halves adapted to be sewn onto a carrier ribbon has a plastic thread formed into a series of helical loops defining convolution portions. Each convolution portion is flattened only in a limited region of each loop that overlaps a loop in the other half of the slide fastener and to a width substantially twice the diameter of the thread. These flattened regions form coupling surfaces which serve to inter-engage with the coupling surfaces formed in the other half of the slide fastener. The flattened regions are sharply kinked and the convolution portions adjacent the flattened regions only are disposed in superposed relation contacting each other and merged opposite to the flattened surfaces into oppositely directed, exposed, smooth return bend portions.

A continuous zigzag-shaped coupling element strip, for use in the production of slide fasteners, is produced on a rotating die wheel having an endless zigzag-shaped peripheral cavity receptive of heated thermoplastic material delivered from a fixed extrusion nozzle. The cavity has a plurality of bottlenecks or retarding means to restrict or retard the flow of the delivered thermoplastic material in the cavity so as to retain much of the thermoplastic material in central and transverse cavity portions that correspond to head and leg portions of a coupling element.
