Abstract:
A device for applying spaced layers generally transversely across an elongate web which defines a through path for the web including parallel inlet and outlet path portions spaced sideways from each other and a transverse path portion between adjacent terminal and beginning ends of the inlet and outlet path portions. The web is moved lengthwise at a predetermined speed in a first direction along the inlet and outlet path portions, the device periodically moves the portion of the web along the transverse path portion generally edgewise in a direction parallel to the first direction and at about the predetermined speed to essentially stop longitudinal movement of the portion of the web along the transverse path portion; and the device applies a layer of material such as tape generally transversely across the portion of the web along the transverse path portion as it moves tangentially by the periphery of a rotating applicator drum.

Abstract:
A technique for adhering individual patches of substrate material to spaced-apart regions of a moving web layer comprises a transporting mechanism for moving the web layer and a supplying mechanism for providing a selected substrate material. An applicating mechanism deposits a selected coating of hotmelt adhesive onto the substrate material, and a regulating mechanism automatically maintains a selected cross-directional registry between the substrate material and the deposited coating of adhesive. The coated substrate is cooled, and a directing mechanism engages the coated substrate to feed it to a separating mechanism at a selected rate. The separating mechanism segments the coated substrate into individual patches. A phasing mechanism provides a selected spatial segregation between the individual patches, and an assemblying mechanism adhesively secures the segregated patches onto selected spaced regions of the moving web layer. An indexing mechanism selectively displaces the coated substrate material from the separating mechanism when the directing mechanism is disengaged from the substrate material.
Abstract:
A reclosable bag having an open end with a side margin adjacent the open end, a metal segment in the side margin having ends extending beyond the opening and a sealing tape overlying the metal strip for excapsulation thereof. Apparatus for manufacturing reclosable bags includes a continuous webbing of flexible bags joined end-to-end, a continuous roll of metal strip with an arrangement for forming the metal strip into discrete segments. A roll of adhesively coated sealing tape and an arrangement for positioning the sealing tape over a metal strip segment while applying the sealing tape to one end of a flexible bag. A method of forming the reclosable bags includes the steps of providing a serial succession of bags joined end-to-end, stretching a portion of each bag so as to be free of wrinkles, aligning a metal strip segment with the wrinkle-free portion of the bag and sealing the metal strip segment of the bag with a portion of sealing tape.
Abstract:
A web of jacketing material is unwound from a reservoir thereof and conveyed at constant speed. A double sided, pressure-sensitive adhesive strip, having one side protected by a removable sheet covering, conveyed in a direction normal to that of the jacketing material, is cut to predetermined lengths, positioned subjacent to and then applied across the width of the jacketing material at predetermined intervals. The jacketing material is sheared into sections by making cuts across the material along the middle of the adhesive strip and at a line midway between adhesive strips.

An envelope forming machine includes frame means supporting envelope blank feed means for feeding envelope blanks from an upstream end serially past aligner means, a printer transfer roller positioned adjacently above selectively operable printer means, scoring means and folding means to an envelope delivery station, with a release paper patch applying means being positioned above the transfer roller to apply a patch of release paper to adhesive on a flap of each envelope as each envelope flap passes over the printer transfer roller which serves as a backup roller against the flap during the application of the patch of release paper to the envelope flap.
Abstract:
In a foil bag composed of a foil piece and a tearing strip means, the bag having a flattened head portion, a longitudinal seam extending across the head portion, and a transverse seam transverse to, and crossing, the longitudinal seam in the head portion and sealing the bag, the tearing strip being spaced from the transverse seam in the direction toward the interior of the bag, and serving to aid opening by permitting a wall of the head portion which is not traversed by the longitudinal seam and which extends approximately across the width of the head portion to be torn open, and the tearing strip being provided with a gripping part projecting from the bag, the bag is provided with cuts defining a U-shaped passage opening, the gripping part extends through the opening from the interior of the bag to the exterior of the bag, and the bag is further provided with a seam parallel to the transverse seam and at the opposite side of the opening from the transverse seam, and a sealing seam intersecting the transverse seam and at least in part covering the transverse seam and the seam parallel to the transverse seam to form therewith a gastight seal around the passage opening.
