This invention relates to improvements made to an anti-theft device for conventional motor vehicles and the method by which the device is made, which device secures the hand brake lever to the gear shift lever. A device is already known, which is made up of two limbs which are pivotally connected together. This invention adds an additional improvement which allows for further rotation of the limbs on an additional axis and further adds an expanded bore in the clamping arm which permits the device to fit a wide range of automobiles. As well the device itself and the method by which it is constructed have also been improved to eliminate virtually all welding except in the area of the locking element.

The apparatus is a cylindrical body having a bore therein terminating in an open end which fits over the handbrake lever. The open end of the body holds a bolt which can be locked therein by a padlock and which abuts an enlarged portion of the handbrake lever preventing removal of the body therefrom. The other end of the body has a hook-shaped gripping member which simultaneously tightly holds a portion of the gear shift stick.

An anti-theft lock for a gear lever of an automobile includes a socket, a locking member and a ratchet member. The ratchet member includes a support seat, a cover, a spring, and a nut. In such a manner, the relative angle between the socket and the locking member may be arbitrarily adjusted rapidly, easily and conveniently, so as to fit the relative angle between the emergency brake and the gear lever of the automobile, thereby enhancing the versatility of the anti-theft lock. In addition, the nut is retained in the retaining hole of the cover, so that the nut cannot be rotated relative to the cover. Thus, the cover cannot be detached from the support seat, thereby preventing the anti-theft lock from being broken intentionally.

The apparatus for locking the handbrake lever and gear shift stick of a motor vehicle is a two-ended body having means adjacent a first end adapted to securely hold a portion of the gear shift stick in a desired position and means adjacent its second end adapted to be locked to a portion of the handbrake lever when the second end of the body is fitted over the handbrake. The means adjacent the first end of the body comprises a slot cut through the surface of the body extending around about one-half of the periphery of the body and merging at right angles at each of its ends with a straight slot which extends towards but terminates some distance from the first end of the body. The means adjacent the second end of the body comprises two slots cut through the surface of the body which each extend around slightly less than one-half the periphery of the body and which are adapted to receive a shackle of a padlock assembly. The shackle has a thickened portion which forms a restriction in an open bore in the body adjacent the second end and thereby prevents removal of the body from the handbrake lever when the padlock assembly is locked.
