An apparatus (1) that can be converted into an air cushion support or into an air cushion support for a vehicle (3). This apparatus can be folded into a compact container or put onto its own wheels (2) permitting it to be hauled as a trailer. The apparatus comprises a latticed folding base composed of hingedly connected main sections (10) and perimeter sections (11-14), a flexible inflatable air cushion skirt (5) and coupling means (8,9) for coupling the vehicle (3) to the main sections of the base, to propulsion and blowing means (6) and to a steering gear mechanism (7). The lower surface of latticed sections is covered by elastic airtight sheet material (33,34) which forms a chamber (35) of the flexible inflatable skirt and an air cushion chamber (37). Longitudinal (19) and transverse (20) girders of main sections of the base are connected by elastic and resilient coupling elements (21) permitting limited displacements of these girders against each other and thus giving to the base the capability of matching, to a certain extent, a given terrain contour when the apparatus is converted into an air cushion support and used as a vehicle for travel.

A compact lift generating system is provided. The lift generating system embodies a wind tunnel enclosure extending between an inlet and an outlet. An airflow generator may be fluidly coupled to the enclosure inlet, an intake of a feedback conduit may be fluidly associated with the enclosure outlet, and an airfoil disposed therebetween. Airflow is urged to engage the airfoil, producing lift. The airflow generator may include a fan, an amplifier and an air knife fluidly coupled in series, wherein an output end of the feedback conduit fluidly connects between the airflow generator and the amplifier. A plurality of wind tunnels enclosures may be operatively associated in series. A plurality of airfoils may be provided in a stacked orientation in one wind tunnel enclosure.

A high-speed transportation system employing a pivotally supported guide rail structure made of sections connected by expansion joints, with a self-propelled airplane automatically steered to fly along the guide rail with minimum force therebetween by a control system that is inclusive of displacement sensors associated with air bearings coupling the aircraft to the guide rail. A wheeled construction having wheels that can be driven, braked or free wheeling is provided that is automatically lowered or maintained in a lowered position contacting the guide rail whenever the aircraft lacks flying speed or the wheels are either driven or braked. The air bearings urge centering of the rail both vertically and laterally with respect thereto. Flight stability of the aircraft is enhanced by the provision of a ground effect bed, and gust spoilers, with the latter additionally functioning as a noise abatement device.
