Herein disclosed is a shock absorber which is to be used with a vehicular coupler. The shock absorber includes a shock absorbing frame which has a pair of shoulders. Further inclusive are a pair of follower plates which are adapted to be held to abut against the shoulders of the shock absorbing frame. A main elastic member is clamped under compression between the paired follower plates. A pair of auxiliary elastic members are also clamped under compression, respectively, between the shock absorbing frame and those faces of the follower plates, which are opposite to the faces contacting with the main elastic member. The initial pressure applied to the main elastic member is balanced by the initial pressures to the auxiliary elastic members. Thus, the paired follower plates can take their neutral positions without being forced onto the shoulders of the shock absorbing frame.

Each plate has an outer profile and a series of grippers extending in a common direction away from one surface of the plate. The grippers are arranged in a predetermined pattern relative to each other and relative to the preform for initially positioning the non-circular preformed block of copolyester elastomer relative to the plates and for thereafter restricting the flow of elastomer relative to the outer profile of the plates.

A composite cushion pad for railroad cars or off-the-road vehicles is disclosed. The composite cushion pad can be circular or rectangular, depending on its use. The circular composite cushion pad is composed of a rigid circular plate having a centrally disposed opening which is surrounded by two juxtaposed, resilient elastomeric annular cushions that form a composite cushion which is bonded to at least one side of the plate. The two annular cushions each have a generally frusto-conically shaped cross-section and are dissimilarly sized so that the composite cushion has a pair of opposing stepped sidewalls. The rectangular composite cushion pad is composed of a rigid rectangular plate. A first, resilient elastomeric cushion with a generally frusto-conically shaped cross-section, is bonded to the rectangular plate and at least one smaller sized resilient elastomeric cushion, also with a generally frusto-conically shaped cross-section, is disposed atop the first cushion to again form a composite cushion which extends from at least one side of the plate and which also has a pair of opposing stepped sidewalls.

A spring element of the type comprising two metal plates and an elastic rubber body therebetween is provided wherein, instead of the rubber body filling all the space between the metal plates, this body is so constructed that it gradually fills the space as the plates are compressed. The rubber body is thicker at the center than at the perimeter and when round, is substantially of the shape of a discus. The plates have corresponding depressions in the central part, so that they can be stacked one on the other with the depressions serving to align the separate elements.
