A method operates an automatic train control system which has an electronic signal box, a balise and a frequency track circuit. To configure the train control system so as to be constructed from components of the European train control system and of the frequency track circuit without substantial additional development effort, the balise is acted upon by indicator messages of a first type of the electronic signal box via an actuation module for modular elements having an addressable memory for the number of currently free block route segments. Indicator messages of a third type are created from indicator messages of a second type. A functional relationship between the addresses of the memory and code information of the frequency track circuit is taken into account during the creation of the third indicator messages. A transmitter of the frequency track circuit is acted upon as a result of the third indicator messages.

In order to make such a rail vehicle maintenance-friendly, the train protection device is embodied in such a way that an interrogation of an identification code is generated on the driver's cab display within the scope of the inputting of the operational data, and when the response to the interrogation is correct a data interrogation with technical maintenance data is generated on the driver's cab display. A method for operating the rail vehicle is also provided.

In order to ensure that the control satisfies high safety requirements, the control arrangement has an operational control module which is different from the control unit, is connected to the control network and has a data connection unit which is different from the control network and by which the operational control module is connected by data technology to the sub-system controllers. A vehicle having the control arrangement and an operational control module forming the control arrangement in cooperation with an operational control system, are also provided.

When the train enters a line with a different signalling system from a current line, the on-board signalling system installs a train control application program compliant with the signalling system of the entering line. Then, the on-board signalling system executes the train control application program, allowing the train to be controlled on the entering line according to a control order created by the trackside signalling system of the entering line.

A method secures a railroad crossing which allows a timely securing of the railroad crossing, and is particularly efficient and reliable. The method proceeds in such a way that sensor data relating to a rail-borne vehicle approaching the railroad crossing are detected by a track-side sensor device. The sensor data contains at least the current speed of the rail-borne vehicle. The detected sensor data are transmitted by the track-side sensor device to a stationary control device. A switch-on time is determined by the stationary control device taking into account the transmitted sensor data and route data. Upon reaching the switch-on time, the securing of the railroad crossing is initiated by the stationary control device. After the railroad crossing has been successfully secured, a travel permission that extends beyond the railroad crossing is determined by a control device of a train control system, and is transmitted to the rail-borne vehicle.
