A wake absorber, wherein an aquatic vehicle with a propulsor mounted on the vehicle and operative to propel the vehicle through a water medium, has a wake absorber mounted on the vehicle aft of the propulsor. The wake absorber includes an artificial muscle surface adapted to be impinged upon by a wake created by the propulsor. The wake absorber further includes electrodes mounted on the artificial muscle surface. Pressure of the wake upon the muscle surface exercises a bending force on the surface, which creates energy that is recovered by the electrodes as electrical power that can be digitized. Energy removed from the muscle surface by the electrodes weakens the wake and renders the wake less pronounced visually and acoustically.

Active acoustic damping is provided with a motor or similar propulsive element such as a multi-phase brushless direct current (DC) motor. To produce the appropriate canceling effect with the motor, the relationship between the operating mode of the motor and the noise produced is observed. This data can be used to identify a relevant transfer function that can be applied to produce a control signal for the motor. For a multi-phase motor, the current control signals provided to at least one phase may be made asymmetric with respect to the other phases to produce actuating forces upon the motor. This actuating force can be used to modify acoustic signals produced by the motor. The active acoustic damping techniques may be applied in any vehicles or devices, including unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), in either an open loop or closed loop manner.

The invention relates to a method and a device for discharging signature free exhaust gas from underwater vehicles, the exhaust gas being a by-product of the production of electric energy in energy converters and being directed by means of pressure into a pipe length through which outboard water is flowing. Gas bubbles of the exhaust gas in the at least one pipe length are reduced using static mixers arranged inside of the pipe length through which water is flowing, with the gas being dissolved by the high turbulence of the fluid. As the exhaust gas is dissolved inside of the underwater vehicle, no gas bubbles that might be located are produced outside the vehicle. Since the working pressure of the method equals the immersion pressure in the pipe, the method consumes only a small amount of energy.

A surface layer for use in connection with an object adapted for motion tugh a fluid includes an array of tiles each having a pair of electrodes and a pair of magnetic poles positioned to generate respective electric and magnetic fields generally transverse to each other. Either or both of the electrodes or magnetic poles are controllable to provide adjustable electrical and/or controllable magnetic fields. A plurality of turbulence sensors is provided each located proximate to and generally upstream of a tile. Each turbulence sensor generating a turbulence signal representative of fluid turbulence proximate thereto. A control circuit for controlling the electrical field generated by the electrodes and/or the magnetic field generated by the magnetic pole in relation to the turbulence signal from the turbulence sensors, thereby to generate a Lorentz force for controlling the fluid. The length and time scales of the electro-magnetic tiles can be matched to those of near-wall turbulence in high Reynolds number flows. The tiles can be fabricated using silicon micro-fabrication or printed circuit board techniques, which provides for cost-effective fabrication and ensures relatively lightweight and reduced energy requirements. Due to their smallness, plurality and amenability, digital microprocessor technology with appropriate algorithm maybe used to control near-wall turbulence.

A non-reflecting, wave-absorbing structure absorbs sound, radio and radiation wave. The non-reflecting, wave-absorbing structure combines an outer non-reflecting wave structure and a wave-absorbing portion. The outer non-reflecting wave structure allows for the transmission of the wave therethrough without appreciable reflection and the wave-absorbing material absorbs substantially all of the transmitted wave. In the case the wave to be absorbed in a sound wave, the wave-absorbing material is preferably an epoxy in a chemical state of gelatinization which is prevented from reaching a state of cure.

An anechoic and decoupling coating for use on the surface of an underwatertructure for decoupling structural vibrations from the water and for absorbing waterborne acoustic waves directed toward the structure from an external source such as a sonar. The coating is an elastomeric matrix containing sealed air-filled cavities as well as random labyrinths of small water-filled passages running throughout and in open communication with a surface facing the water. Acoustic waves incident upon the water-facing surface cause time varying shear and bulk deformations within the matrix. As a result of these deformations, acoustic energy is dissipated by hysteretic damping of the elastomeric matrix as well as by viscosity due to water movement to and fro within the passages and into and out of the matrix.The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.
