    Abstract: Roll winding device and process for use, e.g., in a reel slitting device. The roll winding device includes a roll carrier device, a pneumatic pressure release device including a plurality of blow boxes having top sides with escape nozzles, and a rocker arm on which the blow boxes are mounted in articulated pairs. The blow boxes are swivelably adjustable on tilting axes that run parallel to a roll axis. The process includes positioning the blow boxes beneath a peripheral surface of a roll being wound on the winding machine and ejecting air through the escape nozzles in the blow boxes directed toward the peripheral surface to orient the top surface of the blow box substantially parallel to a tangent of the peripheral surface and to position the top surfaces of the blow boxes a substantially same distance from the peripheral surface. In this manner, the ejected air forms an air cushion under the roll.

    Abstract: A roll-winding machine for winding rolls of a web material, especially for use in a clean room, has a traverse extending the full operating width and provided with a plurality of slides whose arms hold the rolls to be wound. The slides have legs which pass through slits formed in an enclosure constituted by cover plates and/or the traverse walls so that the enclosure completely surrounds the guide surfaces of the slide feet on the rails of the traverse, leaving free only the minimal slits through which the legs pass.     Abstract: A safety nut assembly is provided for mounting to the carriage of a backstand apparatus to which a large roll of paper is rotatably mounted. The backstand apparatus includes an inclined screw spindle to which the carriage is threadedly engaged, such that rotation of the screw spindle moves the carriage therealong. The safety nut assembly comprises a mounting portion for secure but removable mounting to the carriage of the backstand. The safety nut assembly further includes a threaded aperture for threadedly engaging the inclined screw spindle. The threaded grooves of the threaded aperture in the safety nut assembly are larger than the threads of the primary weight-bearing bushing in the carriage. Thus, the safety nut assembly will assume a weight-bearing function only upon failure of the primary bushing in the carriage. The safety nut assembly may be formed from two opposed halves which can be assembled around opposed sides of the inclined screw spindle to facilitate the retrofitted mounting of the safety nut assembly to the backstand apparatus.

    Abstract: In an arrangement for forming rolls from a running web, the web is slit in its longitudinal direction and wound into a plurality of rolls, all having the same rotation direction during winding. The arrangement comprises means providing a peripheral as well as a central roll support force acting on the rolls during winding. The arrangement is so dimensioned that, due to the increase of the roll diameter during winding, the ratio of the peripheral support force and the central support force of a roll undergoes a substantial change merely as a result of the geometrical construction features of the arrangement. In the final phase of the winding of a roll, the central support force of the roll is considerably higher than the peripheral support force of the roll.
