Abstract: A sheet handling apparatus for a printing system includes a rotary drum having an inner chamber circumferentially surrounded by an outer peripheral wall with perforations formed therein. By means of sucking an air flow through the perforations of the drum to a suction system, sheets are attracted to the peripheral wall of the drum. A stationary shutter member is positioned inside the inner chamber for blocking the flow of air through the perforations when they pass, with the rotation of the drum, through a first predetermined angular range. The shutter member includes protrusions while the rotary drum includes recesses for receiving the protrusions, such that a meandering air flow passage is formed between the shutter member and the rotary drum. As such, friction between the rotary drum and the stationary shutter member is reduced, thereby reducing the power consumption of the suction system.

Abstract: A sheet handling apparatus comprising a rotary drum having an outer peripheral wall with perforations, and a number of separate chambers, a suction system for controlling a flow of air through the perforations, thereby to attract sheets to the peripheral wall of the drum, and a stationary shutter member for blocking the flow of air through the perforations when they pass through a predetermined angular range. The number of separate chambers extend in axial direction and are distributed over the periphery of the drum. A disk-shaped manifold at the first axial end of the drum is co-rotatably with the drum. The manifold forms a number of radial channels each connected to one of said chambers and having an opening at a radially inward end of each channel. The stationary shutter member is arranged for blocking an opening of a channel to block air flow from a radially inward end of a channel.

Abstract: A vacuum roller assembly adapted to singulate a sheet from a stack of sheets. The vacuum roller assembly comprising a stationary inner plenum having a substantially linear plenum slot disposed in fluid communication with the vacuum source and a rotating vacuum roller disposed over the stationary inner plenum and rotating about a rotational axis. The vacuum roller includes a plurality of apertures disposed in fluid communication with the substantially linear plenum slot and about the periphery in at least one region of the roller. Furthermore, each of the apertures is substantially slot-shaped and defines a major axis. The major axis is off-axis with respect to the substantially liner plenum slot of the inner plenum to reduce audible noise levels produced by the rotating vacuum roller as air flows through each rotating aperture into the stationary linear plenum slot.

Abstract: An image recording apparatus of the present invention includes a conveyance mechanism having a circumferential wall. On the circumferential wall are formed suction holes which communicate an internal space inside the circumferential wall with the outside of the circumferential wall. A recording medium is placed on the outer circumferential surface of the circumferential wall, and is conveyed on the outer circumferential surface in a direction of the rotation of the circumferential wall. A suction unit sucks the air in the internal space to create an air flow from the outside of the circumferential wall to the internal space via the suction holes. A recording medium ejection path branches off from the outer circumferential surface at a separating position which is at the most downstream position of a record head or a position further from the supply position S1 than the most downstream position from the supply position. A blocker positioned in the internal space successively faces an inner opening of at least one of the suction holes having reached the separating position with the movement of the circumferential wall, so as to block the inner opening of the at least one of the suction holes.

Abstract: An apparatus for removing slip sheets from printing plates has two concentric cylinders that are mutually rotatable about a common axis. Suction exerted via two elongated slots separates a deformable sheet from a relatively rigid object to which it is adhered. The deformable sheet is drawn into a recess presented by the two aligned slots. The concentric cylinders are then rotated to grip the deformable sheet between opposing edges of the slots.

Abstract: A vacuum holddown has a holddown member with an outer surface for temporarily capturing a flexible sheet material via a vacuum force distributed across the outer surface through discrete vacuum channels. A vacuum force valving mechanism abuts an inner surface of the holddown member in a selectable sliding engagement. The valving mechanism has a pattern of apertures therethrough in predetermined pattern such that discrete valve mechanism positions produce discrete vacuum force patterns at the outer surface of the holddown member.

Abstract: The draw-roller unit has only one suction roller (20b, 21b) as a draw roller, in which a constantly acting suction effect is effective along that circumferential portion round which the paper web is looped, whilst the remaining circumferential portion experiences no suction effect. The suction roller has a fixed hollow roller core (65) and a roller casing (61) rotatable about this and consisting of plastic-impregnated carbon fibres, with suction ports (62) distributed over its circumference. The roller core (65) is equipped, on its one side, with an axial connection piece (68b) for fastening to the machine stand and for connection to a vacuum source, on its other side with a bearing journal (66) and, on its circumference having passage orifices (70) with two radial partition walls (69) which are arranged at a specific angular distance from one another and which enclose a suction chamber between them. The roller casing is mounted on the bearing journal (66) a conical connecting flange (61b) fastened directly to the rotor shaft of the drive motor and is mounted with its other end on the connection piece (68b), the gaps between roller casing and partition walls (69) being approximately airtight.
