A preparation method of carboxylic acids or ketones using ozone, singlet state oxygen atom O(1D) or hydroxyl free radical is provided. The method includes: filling ozone, singlet state oxygen atom O(1D) and/or hydroxyl free radical to cycloalkanes or benzenes at a pre-determined temperature and a pre-determined pressure in the presence or absence of light irradiation to produce carboxylic acids or ketones. The reaction occurs at room temperature and atmospheric pressure without producing harmful side products. The preparation method is a simple, low energy consuming, and eco-friendly method.

A process for purifying a dicarboxylic acid that is derived from the mixed oxidation products from an ozonization of a mixture containing an ethylenically unsaturated compound having between 6 to 24 carbons, the process includes distilling the mixed oxidation products to provide a first distillate, and a second distillate, where the second distillate includes the dicarboxylic acid and impurity acids, partitioning the second distillate between water and a organic solvent, separating the organic solvent layer from the water layer, lowering the temperature of the water layer to crystallize at least a portion of the dicarboxylic acid, separating the crystallized dicarboxylic acid solid, melting the crystallized dicarboxylic acid, and distilling the liquid dicarboxylic acid to provide a purified dicarboxylic acid.

A method for increasing ozone concentration in a liquid can include: providing a gas having ozone; introducing the ozone-containing gas into a liquid, wherein the liquid and ozone combination has a temperature between about 0.8 and about 1.5 times the critical temperature of ozone; and increasing isothermally, the pressure of the ozone-containing gas above the liquid to about 0.3 to about 5 times the critical pressure of ozone so as to increase the ozone concentration in the liquid. The temperature is expressed in absolute units (Kelvin or Rankin). The method can be used for removing ozone from a gas or for purifying ozone. The liquid having a high ozone concentration can be used for ozonolysis of a substrate.

Also provided is a method for oxidative decomposition of the thus ozonized product by contact with ozone-free oxygen gas or air.
