A process is described for the preparation of pure, asymmetric 1:2 chromium complex dyes containing at least two groups which impart solubility in water, which process comprises reacting a mixture of two dyes of the formulaeF.sub.1 --(SO.sub.3 H).sub.t (1)andF.sub.2 --SO.sub.2 --Y (2)in which the symbols are as defined in claim 1 with a chromium donor in a molar ratio of 0.85:1.0 to 1.2:1.0 in a one-pot process under pressure at a temperature above 100.degree. C. and at a pH between 0 and 2 and then continuing the reaction at a slightly acid, neutral or slightly alkaline pH. The dyes obtained by the process according to the invention are suitable for dyeing, in particular, wool, silk, leather and synthetic polyamide fibres.

A process for the manufacture of concentrated solutions, having a low salt content, of o,o'-dihydroxy-or o,o'-dihydroxycarboxy-cobalt and -chrominum 1:2 complex dyes which are free from sulfonic acid groups, wherein the metallizing is carried out in water and a solvent of the formula I ##STR1## where X is hydrogen or methyl, m is 0 or 1, n is 1, 2 or 3 and R and R.sup.1 independently of one another are hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, in the presence or absence of additional solvents, and in the presence of water-soluble salts.

By metallization of metallizable monoazo or azomethine dyes with cobalt-donating compounds in the presence of a nitrite, especially NaNO.sub.2, 1:1 cobalt complexes containing a nitrite ion are obtained in a high degree of metallization which can be reacted with metallizable monoazo or azomethine dyes to give very homogeneous 2:1 cobalt complexes in a high degree of purity. This is particularly advantageous when asymmetrical 2:1 cobalt complexes are to be prepared. The process is particularly useful for the preparation of nitrite ion-containing 1:1 complexes of cobalt and a monoazo compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is --OH or --NHR,wherein R is hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl or naphthyl group,Ring A is further unsubstituted or further substituted by at least one halo, nitro or optionally substituted alkyl, alkoxy or sulfamoyl substituent, andThe naphthalene ring is further unsubstituted or further substituted by at least one hydroxy, sulfamoyl or acylamino substituent.
