Abstract:
This invention relates to extend the benefits of using hypochlorite compounds such as sodium hypochlorite to clean and disinfect articles while reducing or eliminating the side effects of treating an article with a strong oxidant material. The invention relates to a single step process involving mixing of precursor compositions of a suitable hypohalite or hypohalous acid with a solution of a reducing agent. Optionally a buffer may be present in either or both precursor compositions, such that at time of use such active hypohalous acid concentration in the resulting aqueous mixture remains at a sufficient activity level to effect one or more desired benefits against a target substrate for a desired period of time. The oxidant is substantially consumed by reaction with the reducing agent after the time needed for achieving the desired benefit has passed.

The present invention comprises chlorinated and non-chlorinated alkaline cleaning compositions for removal of proteinaceous and fatty soils at low temperature, i.e. less than 120° F., with little or no deleterious affect on cleaning performance. According to the invention, applicants have found that adding additional alkalinity makes protein removal more difficult and reducing the amount of alkalinity actually improves performance. According to the invention optimized combinations of chlorine and alkalinity components for low temperature cleaning as well as a surfactant system optimized for low temperature fatty soil removal are disclosed.

Automatic dishwasher detergent composition is formulated as a linear viscoelastic, pseudoplastic, gel-like aqueous product of exceptionally good physical stability in exposed daylight, low bottle residue, low cup leakage, and improved cleaning performance, Linear viscoelasticity and pseudoplastic behavior is attributed by incorporation of cross-linked high molecular weight polyacrylic acid type thickener. Potassium to sodium weight ratios of at least 1/1 minimize amount of undissolved solid particles to further contribute to stability and pourability. Control of incorporated air bubbles functions to provide the product with a bulk density of about 1.35 to 1.40 g/cc which roughly corresponds to the density of the liquid phase. A polymeric chelating agent in the composition improves physical stability.

A moldable detergent having a stable available halogen concentration suitable for use in industrial and institutional dishwashers is produced in a process which comprises:admixing an alkali metal polyphosphate compound, an alkali metal silicate compound, and an aqueous solution of an available halogen compound to form an available halogen containing mixture, andadmixing an alkali metal phosphate compound to produce a moldable detergent composition containing at least 50 percent by weight of solids and having an available halogen concentration of at least about 1 percent by weight.

Highly alkaline detergent compositions are prepared by mixing together, in a mixing device, a melt of alkaline material with a hardness sequestering agent, such as an alkali metal complex phosphate sequestrant. The resulting mixture is, then, pelletized on a chill belt. A source of solid active chlorine pellets is combined with the pelletized mixture. Chlorine degradation is essentially eliminated by combining the alkaline material pellets with the pelletized chlorine source.

A solid cast warewashing detergent composition that can be formed, cast and distributed within a container or capsule. The cast composition which has improved cleaning, bleaching and dissolution properties, can be made by forming a hydration mass of an alkali metal metasilicate, an alkali metal phosphate, an alkali metal hypochlorite, chlorinated alkali metal phosphate, and sufficient water of hydration to harden the mass. Such cast detergent compositions can be attached to dispensing mechanisms in warewashing machines and can generate, as a result of the action of a stream of water on the cast material, a high performance warewashing solution.

A composition for the automatic cleaning of toilet bowls includes at least one amine oxide, at least one appropriate colorant and at least one pH regulating agent, the composition being such that the pH of the aqueous mixture in the toilet bowl is about 6.3.+-.0.5. The composition is applied by filling containers designed to be used especially in the reservoir or tank of the toilet bowl.
