A method for producing pulverized coal including the steps of providing a drying gas heated to a predefined temperature in a hot gas generator; feeding the heated drying gas into a pulverizer; introducing raw coal into the pulverizer, the pulverizer grinding the raw coal into pulverized coal; collecting a mixture of drying gas and pulverized coal from the pulverizer and feeding the mixture to a filter, the filter separating the dried pulverized coal from the drying gas; collecting the dried pulverized coal for further use and feeding the drying gas from the filter to an exhaust line; and collecting the drying gas exiting the filter and feeding part of the collected drying gas to a recirculation line for feeding recirculation drying gas to the hot gas generator. According to an important aspect of the present invention, the step of providing the drying gas includes feeding a variable flow rate of hot stove waste gas to the hot gas generator through a hot stove waste gas line so as to maximize the amount of hot stove waste gas used as drying gas. A pressure of the drying gas at a pulverizer gas inlet is controlled by regulating a flow rate of the hot stove waste gas through the hot stove waste gas line.

A connecting structure of a blast furnace hot stove of the type in which a heat accumulation chamber dome and a combustion chamber dome are directly connected to each other through a dome connecting pipe which does not have any expansion joint. The ratio (RD/TD) of the diameter (RD) of the dome connecting pipe to the diameter (TD) of the heat accumulation chamber dome approximately meets the condition wherein 0.24.ltoreq.(RD/TD).ltoreq.0.60, while the ratio (RD/ND) of the diameter (RD) of the dome connecting pipe to the diameter (ND) of the combustion chamber dome approximately meets the condition wherein 0.44.ltoreq.(RD/ND).ltoreq.0.80. The connecting structure may have a reinforcement ring provided on straight barrel portions immediately under the heat accumulation chamber dome and the combustion chamber dome, and a connecting beam may be fixed at one end to one of the reinforcement rings and engage at its other end with the other of the reinforcement rings for limited sliding motion. The connecting structure may further have a reinforcement member provided in each of the regions where the dome connecting pipe is connected to the heat accumulation chamber dome and the combustion chamber dome.

A ceramic gas burner for a hot-blast stove has a burner crown essentially composed of a plurality of shaped bricks which define terminal portions of at least one combustion air duct and at least one gas duct of said burner for flow of respectively combustion air and gas. A simple and inexpensive structure is obtained when the bricks are of at most two principal types in respective layers. The bricks of each type are identical, but may be of a subsidiary type of which two bricks combine to form one brick of the principal type.

A ceramic heater comprising a ceramic substrate is described which has formed thereon a layer of a silicide of an element selected from groups IVa, Va and VIa of the periodic table. The heater has stable temperature vs. resistance characteristics, has high mechanical strength and produces the desired temperature in a very short period of time.

A ceramic burner for gas, for a combustion chamber of a hot-blast stove of a blast furnace, has parallel vertical supply ducts for the two combustion components (gas and air). A first one of said ducts opens upwardly at a first outlet which is substantially oblong in plan view and the second of said ducts opens at a plurality of second outlets which are located on either side of and above the first outlet, the general discharge directions of the second outlets being oblique to that of the first outlet. In order to provide improvement in the mixing and homogenisation of the combustion components, the first outlet has, as seen in plan view, a slot shape and has, in its long sides, a plurality of recesses which extend outwardly towards the second outlets. The second outlets are arranged alongside the said long sides of the first outlet with the second outlets on one side opposite those on the other side. The recesses are, along the length of the first outlet, located alternately in said long sides and, on each said long side, directed towards alternate ones of said second outlets.

Intercrystalline stress corrosion of the walls of heat exchangers employed to produce hot air for injection into a blast furnace, particularly the wall of the passage interconnecting the combustion and heat exchange chambers, is avoided by eliminating pressure differentials across the walls. Also, the walls of the heat exchanger are heated to a temperature above the condensation point of deleterious vapors present or formed in the apparatus to thereby further minimize the possibility of occurrence of stress corrosion.
