The invention relates to a method for the taut-holding of the weft thread (15) in the mixing tube (4) of the main nozzle (1) of an air jet loom, and an air jet loom for the carrying out of the method. The invention has the underlying technical object of avoiding an air stream effective over nearly the total length of the main nozzle (1) and disadvantageously influencing the structure of the weft thread (5) during its idle phase in the main nozzle (1), and nonetheless holding the weft thread (5) taut in the main nozzle (1). This is achieved in that the air stream, during the idle phase of the weft thread (5), impinges on only its front end (5a) in the mixing tube of the main nozzle.

A weft thread insertion device for an air jet loom includes a nozzle block mounted on a sley to be movable together therewith. The movable block has a plurality of individual nozzles. Devices supply compressed air to the nozzle block by way of one or more stationary distributor blocks. At least one outlet is associated with the distributor block. Compressed air is supplied through respective flexible pressure lines from the respective outlets to respective inlets of the individual nozzles of the nozzle block. In order to supply air using short pressure lines that do not intersect, the invention provides that the distributor block or blocks so arranged that they at least partially surround nozzle block regardless of the position of the reed.

A weaving machine contains a reed (8) and a weft thread guide apparatus (32) which are connected to one another and are pivotal between an insertion position and a beat-up position. For the insertion of a weft thread, a weft insertion apparatus (14) which is arranged in a fixed spatial position and has at least one blower nozzle (22) for the insertion of a weft thread (38) into the guide passage (36), a thread clamp (16) and a shear (15) are provided. Coupled to the reed are the thread clamp in order to clamp an inserted weft thread (38) and to forward it synchronously with the guide passage (36) from the insertion point up to the abutment point, and the shear (15), with the shear (15) being placed after the thread clamp (16) in the beat-up direction in order to sever off the weft thread immediately after the clamping. Through the arrangement of the insertion apparatus in a fixed position and the functional association of the thread clamp and the shear with the reed, the control is simplified so that up to sixteen weft threads of differing kinds and colors can be inserted.

The transport of a flexible thread is effected by means of an injector for inserting a weft thread into a weaving mechine. In order to therewith keep the air consumption as low as possible the diameter of the discharge tube is made as small as possible. For nevertheless increasing the force imparted to the thread and thereby its directional stability the invention uses with an injector for subsonic inlet flow of the gas a discharge tube which widens along a very small conical angle, such that over its full length the gas obtains the speed of sound. With an injector for supersonic flow of the inlet gas this supersonic velocity is maintained along the full length of the discharge tube likewise by widening the discharge tube along a very small conical angle.The directional stability of the thread is further increased if, by keeping constant the cross-sectional area of the discharge tube, it is flattened in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the warp threads.

Disclosed herein are apparatus and method of multi-shed weaving wherein a weft thread is inserted into a retained shed by a fluid jet. The movement of the fluid jet can be synchronized with the movement of the retained shed. The shed may be retained by a shed-retaining member or members adapted to removably receive one of the weft threads. A device is also disclosed for spreading apart the wrap threads to facilitate the insertion of the shed-retaining members into an open shed prior to its retention.

The channel can be adjusted so that the admitted air is directed for deceleration of the thread counter to the insertion direction. Each weft insertion nozzle pipe has a first port and a second port through which the first and second air streams are introduced into the weft insertion the nozzle pipe. The second port is positioned downstream of the first port and closer to a free exit end (15) of the respective weft insertion nozzle pipe but still spaced from the free exit end.
