An arrangement increasing the rate of production and operating reliability of a method for identifying the type and/or size of a work receiving unit applied to an automatic sewing device. The identifying procedure is carried out prior to the sewing operation. According to the invention a sensor is associated with the sewing head or with the lower arm and provides a signal when coinciding with a mark at the work receiving unit. The sensor is first moved along a straight line in X-direction and then along a straight line in Y-direction. The straight lines each include a mark, one of which represents type of the work receiving unit and the other one the size of the same.

A gauging attachment for machines utilizing a pantograph mechanism including a gauging assembly having a master gauge plate adapted to be coupled to the pantograph mechanism. A series of gauges are selectively engageable with the gauge plate to correctly position the workpiece. A clamping plate secures the workpiece to the master plate and in engagement with the gauge. The entire gauging assembly moves in response to motion imparted to the pantograph at a stylus. The stylus is traced along templates selectively interchangeable in a removable template tray. The attachment is adjustable and once set maintains a predetermined position with respect to the workpiece to facilitate repetitive operations without further adjustment.

For the production of circular seams with overlapped ends on a workpiece, a sewing machine driven in a controlled manner and provided with a marker for applying a mark, and a sensor for detecting the mark after marking the workpiece with a mark. The workpiece is sewn until the mark is effectively detected by the sensor which is disposed in a predetermined relationship to the marker, and thus initiates a control operation which initiates the end of the sewing operation in dependence upon a particular number of oversewn stitches. The mark may be applied and detected on the work material in one operating cycle. Thus, for example, circular workpiece openings may be sewn in such a way that the seam end is matched to the start of the seam in spite of different diameters of the work piece opening.

Method and apparatus for determining and regulating the amount of advance of a plurality of workpiece plies at a sewing machine which is affected by scanning the individual plies while recording the stitches being formed between two separate feed points and actuating top and bottom feed devices to achieve a desirable feed of each ply. Signs present or to be applied at any desired point of the workpiece plies are scanned at two successive points, and pulses generated by a pulse generator connected with the main shaft of the machine are summed during this period of time. The pulse sum is compared with a number of pulses which depends on the mutual spacing of the scanning points and on the adjusted stitch length. For two work plies the pulse sums formed between the recognition of the signs are compared directly. As signs to be scanned are used either imprinted marks, the jags of a pinked workpiece edge, or the bright, dark structure of a surface section of the workpiece.

This invention relates to a method for producing several large area and in particular multi-layered sewing products, for instance mattress sheets, from a preferably multi-layered length of sewing material which is fed to a sewing unit, for instance a multiple needle sewing unit and preferably a multiple needle chain stitch sewing machine in which the length of sewing material is sewn in such a manner that within the length of sewing material several sewing products are formed with at least one sewing product pattern, wherein the length of sewing material is fed to a processing station for sewn material downstream of the sewing unit, in which processing station the sewn length of sewing material is separated and in particular cut to individual sewing products at least transversely to its conveying direction, wherein markers are applied to the length of sewing material which carry information concerning the processing of the length of sewing material and which are read by a reading device. For improving a method of this kind with regard to its flexibility and efficiency of processing of a length of sewing material the object of the method according to the invention is that the markers are applied immediately before, after and/or during the sewing operation.
