Apparatus for securing glass panels in fire barriers comprises an elongated glazing strip made of layers of sheet material adhered together. The sheet material is formed from a slurry mixture of wood fibers and a fire retardant chemical by the use of heat and pressure. The panels are also preferably secured by metal clips having a flat base of thin sheet material and upstanding, elongated projections from the base that are parallel to each other and spaced apart by a distance corresponding to the width of the glass panel to be secured. This arrangement makes it possible to locate glass panels in fire barriers without substantial reduction in the ability of the barrier to contain a fire.

Fire and smoke barriers are deployed automatically on detection of fire of smoke. This can result in evacuees being on the wrong side of a deployed barrier and needing to evacuate through the barrier. The barrier includes a curtain rolled on a roller in a head box, a pair of side guides and a bottom bar. At least one of the side guides being partially movable, temporarily opening the barrier to allow the escape of an evacuee. Both side guides can be movable, allowing the barrier to swing from its top. Alternatively one side guide can be hinged to a wall with the other being able to move away from its wall, the head box joining the tops of the side guides. The barrier opens like a door to allow escape of an evacuee. The door having a closure spring to ensure it returns to its closed position.

At least one telescopic element (15) is arranged between a lateral edge (10) of the door leaf (8) and the bulkhead frame (3). Said telescopic element (15) is displaceable relative to the bulkhead frame (3) in the direction of the arrows (20). The telescopic element (15) can compensate for changes in the joint (50) between the door leaf (8) and the bulkhead frame (3) and/or also seal said joint (50). Changes in length as a result of heating of the components during a fire can thus be accommodated and the door leaf (8) and fireproofing glazed element (1) hence not destroyed.
