A rock dusting apparatus comprising: a housing; a tank mounted within the housing which comprises a removable top wall member, a sidewall member and a bottom wall member configured to form an internal tank compartment for holding and mixing a rock dust composition; a mixer positioned on the bottom wall member for mixing the rock dust composition; a tank discharge port positioned on the bottom wall member or a lower portion of the sidewall member through which the rock dust composition can be discharged from the tank; a conduit extending from the tank discharge port to a housing discharge port; the conduit comprising a pump for transporting the rock dust composition through the conduit and through a discharge line operatively connected to the housing discharge port; and one or more motors mounted within the housing for powering the mixer and the pump. The apparatus is useful for spraying rock dust compositions for suppressing propagation of a flame and/or fire caused by ignition of coal dust and/or gas within a coal mine.

In a method for introducing and blowing rock dust to bind carbon dust during advance working or coal mining using an advance working or mining machine, respectively, the cutting tools are retracted relative to a displaceable machine frame after having cut an outbreak or excavation. During the displacement of the machine frame into a new outbreak or excavation position, rock dust is blown onto the roof and lateral-wall surfaces laid bare by the cutting tools, through nozzles arranged on the machine frame by the aid of pressure medium such as compressed air. The advance working or mining machine used to carry out this method includes a displaceable machine frame and a carriage movably mounted on the machine frame and carrying a pivotable cantilever arm on which cutting heads or rolls are rotationally mounted, and a loading device intended to receive cut or broken material. At least one nozzle for atomizing rock dust is arranged on the displaceable machine frame and at least one storage bin and a compressed-air source are arranged on the advance working or mining machine.

The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for dispersing rock dust within a mine tunnel. The present invention is particularly useful for rock dusting coal mines. A quantity of rock dust is dispersed evenly over the conveyor system which runs through the area of the mine which requires dusting. The apparatus of the present invention comprises a wheeled vehicle having a diesel engine which drives the vehicle. In addition, the diesel engine drives a blower or fan. The vehicle of the present invention is adapted to run along the conveyor system within the mine. As a result, the vehicle runs over the rock dust which is dispersed on the conveyor belt. As the vehicle passes over the rock dust the fan which is associated with the vehicle blows into the rock dust causing the rock dust to disperse from the conveyor belt and to coat the associated interior tunnel. The vehicle of the present invention includes an apparatus for directing the flow of air in such a direction that rock dust leaves the surface of the conveyor in the desired direction.
