The engine is controlled such that gas will flow from the first to the second chamber while the engine performs a working cycle and the engine is thus controlled such that a piston is used for compressing gas which performs a work on the same piston, which is connected by a rod to a cranking mechanism to transfer work from the rod by an essentially only rectilinear movement.

A plurality of crossheads are constrained to move in a reciprocating fashion by travelling along a pair of parallel guide rods. The crosshead system further includes a mechanism for adjusting a clearance between the crosshead elements and the opposed parallel face surfaces of the rotating swashplate. The adjustment mechanism includes a threaded adjuster cup which is maintained in a lock position through a fastener which drives a conical cone into the conical inside surface of the adjuster sleeve thus fixing its rotated and hence linear position.

An automotive air conditioning system utilizes environmentally safe gases as the working fluid for a Stirling cycle refrigeration unit. The Stirling cycle refrigeration unit includes a compressor housing and an expander housing. A first heat transfer fluid circulation system removes heat from the compressor housing and expels it to the ambient atmosphere. A second heat transfer fluid circulation system removes heat from the automotive interior and expels it to the expander housing. Each of the compressor housing and the expander housing contains an equal number of cylinders. Respective cylinders in the compressor housing and the expander housing are fluidically connected to one another; and the reciprocal movement of pistons disposed in these respective cylinders is maintained in a specified phase relationship.

An improved Stirling engine has a piston and a crosshead slidably disposed inside a cylinder and secured to one another by a piston rod so as to reciprocate as a single body with a space formed between the crosshead and the piston. An oil-deflecting guard for deflecting oil which is scattered by the movement of the crosshead is disposed between the crosshead and the piston and is supported so as to move with the crosshead. A first oil-absorbing member for absorbing oil which enters the space above the oil-deflecting guard is disposed on the oil-deflecting guard on the piston side thereof. A second oil-absorbing member is disposed between the first oil-absorbing member and the piston with a space therebetween. The space between the crosshead and the piston can be connected with the inside of a crankcase by oil drainage holes.

A Stirling engine design which is solar powered is disclosed. A solar receiver converts solar radiation to thermal energy, which is stored in a storage chamber. The engine includes a displacer chamber with a displacer piston which divides the chamber into hot and cold subchambers, the hot subchamber being heated by the storage chamber. A mechanism is provided for cooling the cold subchamber. The engine also includes an alternator chamber with an alternator piston which divides the chamber into working and bounce subchambers, the working subchamber being in fluid communication with the cold subchamber of the displacer. The working fluid circulates through the cold subchamber and the working subchamber and obtains heat from the storage chamber. The working fluid is displaced by the displacer piston to drive the alternator piston, and work output is obtained from the alternator piston.

The pressure containment device for containing pressurized gas within a Stirling engine is characterized by enclosing a drive mechanism housing with a cylindrical pressure hull having first and second ends whereby a portion of the drive mechanism housing extends through the first end of the pressure hull and the second end thereof, is rigidly connected to the drive mechanism housing. An o-ring is used to seal the connection where the drive mechanism housing extends through the first end of the pressure hull to allow small axial and radial relative motions therebetween. An output shaft extends along the axis of revolution of the pressure hull and is supported by front and rear main bearings and a thrust bearing, all rigidly connected to the drive mechanism housing. A rotating shaft seal, also connected to the drive mechanism housing, prevents pressurized gas from escaping along the output shaft.

A phase and stroke control apparatus for the pistons of a Stirling engine includes a ring on the end of each piston rod in which a pair of eccentrics is arranged in series, torque transmitting relationship. The outer eccentric is rotatably mounted in the ring and is rotated by the orbiting ring; the inner eccentric is mounted on an output shaft. The two eccentrics are mounted for rotation together within the ring during normal operation. A device is provided for rotating one eccentric with respect to another to change the effective eccentricity of the pair of eccentrics. A separately controlled phase adjustment is provided to null the phase change introduced by the change in the orientation of the outer eccentric, and also to enable the phase of the pistons to be changed independently of the stroke change.
