摘要: A system for energy conversion, the system including a closed cycle engine containing a volume of working fluid, the engine comprising a first chamber defining an expansion chamber and a second chamber defining a compression chamber each separated by a piston attached to a connection member of a piston assembly, and wherein the engine comprises a heater body in thermal communication with the first chamber, and further wherein the engine comprises a cold side heat exchanger in thermal communication with the second chamber, and wherein a third chamber is defined within the piston, wherein the third chamber is in selective flow communication with the first chamber, the second chamber, or both.

摘要: A monolithic heat exchanger body for inputting heat to a closed-cycle engine includes heating walls and heat sink, such as heat transfer regions. The heating walls are configured and arranged in an array of spirals or spiral arcs relative to a longitudinal axis of an inlet plenum. Adjacent portions of the heating walls respectively define corresponding heating fluid pathways fluidly communicating with the inlet plenum. At least a portion of the heat sink is disposed about at least a portion of the monolithic heat exchanger body. The heat sink includes working-fluid bodies including working-fluid pathways that have a heat transfer relationship with the heating fluid pathways. Respective ones of the heat transfer regions have a heat transfer relationship with a corresponding semiannular portion of the heating fluid pathways. Respective ones of the heat transfer regions include working-fluid pathways fluidly communicating between a heat input region and a heat extraction region.

摘要: Method and system for efficient energy recovery from heat source with external combustion engine. Invention include sequentially operating drive mechanism for power pistons and displacement pistons of gamma type Stirling engine, providing nearly ideal pistons operation sequence. Stirling engine is supplemented with working flow fluid control and separation member between working fluid reheater and rest of the engine during high pressure stage. Working fluid is circulated in flow control via one or more consecutive displacement cylinder/power cylinder stages before reheating. Control system is directing working fluid from inlet port to the first displacement cylinder, further to the first power cylinder and after expansion either to reheating or to the next displacement cylinder. Low temperature working fluid is finally directed back to the counter flow type reheater.

摘要: A double acting, miller cycle, reciprocating piston with dual rotary displacer, stirling engine is provided. Configurable as a heat pump, a heat engine, or as a combination with one side driving the other, the engine is completely closed, sealed and pressurized with the piston ring as the only internal seal. A miller cycle is created by allowing transfer of the working fluid (typically hydrogen gas) past the piston to balance working fluid pressure only at the extremes of the piston stroke. Two coordinated rotating displacers service opposite sides of one piston. Each displacer manages heat flow, according it its length and shape, through one side of the length of its encasing tube into and out of the working fluid through the other side of the length of its encasing tube. The dead space between the piston and the displacer holds regenerator material.

摘要: A linear, multi-cylinder Stirling cycle machine comprises a plurality of Stirling cycle units arranged in an open series or closed loop. Each of the units comprises a compression space in fluid communication with an expansion space via a regenerative heat exchange assembly. The compression space and expansion space are in fluid communication with, respectively, a compression piston and an expansion piston, and the separate Stirling cycle units are mechanically coupled together by linear power transmitters, which connect the expansion piston of one unit to the compression unit of the other. The linear power transmitters can be linear transducers such as linear motors or generators. In the open series arrangement the series of Stirling cycle units can have an initiating compressor at one end and a terminating expander at the other end. hi the closed loop arrangement, one of the Stirling cycle units can include an exergy throttle to restrict gas flow rates to control the speed of the machine. The machine may be used in a combined heat and power apparatus with some Stirling cycle units acting as engine/generators and with waste heat being used for heating. Some Stirling cycle units can be used for cooling or heat pumping.

Embodiments of the invention relating to the production of a cooling effect and the generation of electrical power, change the thermodynamic state of the system by extracting energy from a pressurized fluid. Energy extraction is attained using an expansion process, which is as nearly isentropic as possible for the appropriately chosen fluid. An isentropic expansion occurs when a compressed gas does work to expand, and in the disclosed embodiments, the gas does work by overcoming either an electrostatic or a magnetic force.

摘要: This invention is an efficient free-piston internal-combustion engine having an expansion ratio greater than the compression ratio and preferably with gas bearings supporting the piston. The use of gas bearings in combination with high-temperature ceramic materials allows the engine to be nearly adiabatic and with exhaust temperatures in excess of 600.degree. C. These high exhaust temperatures in turn allow the engine to operate as a topping cycle for gas turbines, Stirling engines, steam engines, etc. An improved valving system for flexible control of the engine may include the use of a valve actuator in a piston. In one embodiment, a pair of oppositely disposed combustion chamber passageways extending between the combustion chamber and the earth's atmosphere, each have a combustion-chamber valve for controlling the passage of gas through the passageways. The combustion-chamber valves are essentially simultaneously opened and closed to permit independent variation and control of the compression ratio, expansion ratio, and stroke of the engine. When the valves are opened, the combustion chamber is purged or supercharged with combustion supporting air, and closed to initiate compression. Variable control of the piston positions at which the valves are opened and closed permits the engine to operate at a high efficiency over a broad range of power output loading conditions. In another embodiment the combustion chamber and a gas compressor are combined in the same cylinder.
