摘要: A rotary component of a rotary device for heat engines, such as a turbine wheel of a gas turbine or a turbocharger, formed in an integral ceramic-fiber-reinforced sintered ceramic structure. The reinforcing ceramic fibers in the edges of the vanes of the rotary component are oriented radially to prevent the chipping of the edges of the vanes liable to occur in a direction perpendicular to the direction of thickness of the vanes. The rotary component is formed by molding a mixture of a ceramic powder, ceramic fibers and organic additive or additives in a mold having a cavity having the same shape as that of the rotary component except that the depth of sections of the cavity corresponding to the vanes is greater than the height of the vanes to be formed, sintering the molding, and cutting the vanes of the molding in a predetermined height.

摘要: The invention is concerned with the problem of joining ceramic components to metal components.A composite ceramic-metal component is proposed, e.g. a rotor disc for a gas turbine engine (see FIG. 2), in which the main body of the component is made from a ceramic, e.g. Silicon Nitride, but the areas at which attachment is to be made to a metal component is formed from metal compacted onto the ceramic by a hot isostatic pressing process. The method of manufacture described is to form a ceramic core with holes appropriately positioned in it where a connection is to be made to another component, surround the core with a powdered metal, e.g. a Nickel-based superalloy, ensuring that the holes also fill with powder, compacting the powder by hot isostatic pressing, and then machining away unwanted metal.

摘要: A mixer for a turbofan engine includes a centerbody and a mixer nozzle. The mixer nozzle surrounds at least a portion of the centerbody and is spaced apart to define a core flow path between the mixer nozzle and the centerbody. The mixer nozzle is configured, when bypass air flows through the turbofan engine, to direct at least a portion of the bypass air to impinge on the centerbody. The mixer nozzle includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced mixer lobes that extend axially in a rearward direction and have a cross-section shape defined by a set of equations.

摘要: An aerofoil 50 and in particular an aerofoil utilised as a turbine blade within gas turbine engines generally incorporate passages 52, 53 along which fluid flows to provide cooling within the aerofoil 50. Previously straight webs were utilised in order to define passages but such configurations limit design choices with regard to achieving torsional and flap vibrational characteristics. By provision of webs 51 which have chordal variation in a serpentine or S shape wider design choices are provided with respect to achieving torsional and flat vibration control. Webs 51 with such chordal variation are achieved through manufacturing processes which remove forming cores by leaching or a lost wax technique or other erosion process. It will also be understood that chordal variations in the webs can create flow rate variations to facilitate particulate separation in a fluid flow through the passages 52, 53 within an aerofoil.

摘要: A method for suppressing noise in a turbofan engine includes segmenting coaxial inner and outer flow streams into circumferentially interleaved inner and outer segments beginning at a common location along the engine axis, diverting additional portions of the outer stream radially inwardly from an axial location downstream of the common location and combining the inner segments, the outer segments and the additional portions into a common stream so that the additional portions are introduced into discrete radial locations in the common stream. The diverted additional portions of the outer stream eliminate localized regions of hot, high velocity gases in the combined stream to achieve improved noise suppression.

摘要: A lobed mixer has major and minor lobes. The major lobes increase in both height and width in the downstream axial direction. Each major lobe has two minor lobes positioned on its radially outer surface located downstream of the beginning of the major lobe. The radial depth of the minor lobes increases with downstream axial distance but is never greater than the depth of the major lobes. Each of the chutes formed between the minor lobes introduces an additional stream of cold, low velocity fan flow into the hot, high velocity core flow to improve the uniformity of mixing. The double lobed mixer decreases acoustic intensity while having little or no effect on engine performance.
