A lamp reflector for a lamp that conforms to a vehicle body shape and method of producing such reflector, including a die therefor. The lamp reflector comprises a plurality of reflecting sections disposed about an optical axis of the lamp. Significant differences in light distribution at the boundaries between the reflecting sections are avoided by using a fundamental surface K of a reflecting surface 3 that may be generated as a free surface so as to conform to a vehicle body shape. After a reference curve is set on the fundamental surface K, several points P, P, . . . are specified on the reference curve. A very small reflecting surface R is determined at the point P according to the law of reflection so that a ray emitted from a light source and made incident on the point P is reflected to become a ray in parallel with the optical axis. Then, a tangential plane T of the fundamental surface at the point P is determined, and an outer product W of a normal vector N.sub.-- T of the tangential plane T and a normal vector N.sub.13 R of the very small reflecting surface R is calculated. A closed curve is generated by performing vector control in which the outer product W is employed as its tangential vector at each reflection point P around the optical axis, and connecting the tangential vectors by spline approximation.

A vehicle lamp which includes a reflection mirror, a front lens, and a light source arranged between the reflection mirror and the front lens. The central axis of the light source is perpendicular to the principal optical axis of the reflection mirror. On the reflection mirror, there is formed a reflection surface composed of a large number of reflection steps which are defined by portions of paraboloids of revolution and are formed between adjacent ones of closed curves. The closed curves are obtained as lines of intersection between a fundamental reflection surface and a group of paraboloids of revolution composed of a large number of paraboloids of revolution having different focal distances. Centers of the group of closed curves forming the boundaries of the reflection steps are arranged at a position distant from an intersection at which the principal optical axis of the reflection mirror crosses the reflection mirror, and square lens steps are formed on the front lens. Due to the foregoing, the arrangement of the image of the light source that has been projected by the reflection steps tend to be matched with the sections of the lens steps formed on the front lens.

A method of forming a reflection surface of a reflection mirror of a vehicle lamp includes the following steps. A basic reflection surface is formed by preliminarily setting a basic reflection surface on which multiple paraboloids are to be formed, under a setting condition. Angles .theta. at which light that is emitted from a light source located at a focal point is incident on different positions on the basic reflection surface, are calculated, to thereby form a plural number of contours of equal incident angles on the basic reflection surface. A distribution of incident angles is evaluated on the basis of the contours of equal incident angles. If the result of the evaluation is good, the basic reflection surface is set as a final basic reflection surface. If it is no good, the setting condition is changed to another or other setting conditions, and the step of the preliminary setting and the step of the evaluation of the incident angle distribution are repeated under the changed setting condition or conditions. Through those steps, a basic reflection surface can reliably be set which has an incident angle distribution excellent in suppressing the generation of dark portions on the reflection surface to the minimum and at the same time securing a required solid angle of the reflection mirror.
