Finally, a number of reflecting steps are formed on the basic surface between adjacent ones of the intersecting lines. The reflecting steps are defined by parts of the individual paraboloids of revolution.

The headlight has a gas discharge lamp and a reflector. The reflector has an upper reflector region and a lower reflector region. A lens is arranged after the reflector in a light outlet direction, and a screen device is provided between the reflector and the lens. A movable screen member of the screen device is adjustable between a position for low beam in which it screens light reflected from the lower reflector region and produces a bright-dark limit, and a position for high beam in which light reflected from the lower reflector region passes past the screen member and can exit the headlight. Moreover, the movable screen member in its position for low beam is adjustable between a position for right traffic and a position for left traffic. Therefore the head light can be used in a simple manner as a high beam head light and a low beam head light, and also can be converted for the utilization for right traffic and left traffic.

The drawback of conventional projector type head lights of lighting excessively the immediate front of the automobile is dissolved by an improved projector type head light according to the invention. Since a projector type head light according to the invention comprises an elliptic reflector which is divided into upper and lower halves and the upper reflecting surface is defined to be found within an orthogonal projection area that allows irradiation of the orthogonal front such that reflected rays of light from the lateral sections of said upper reflecting surface are converged to the center of the light distribution pattern and those from the remaining sections are dispersed laterally, the light distribution pattern has a low profile central area while the overall contour of the light distribution pattern shows a high profile and a substantially even intensity of light over the entire area so that the orthogonal immediate front of the projector type head light is not particularly intensely lighted and the curbs and the sidewalks can be lighted with a sufficient intensity of light to remarkably improve the performance of projector type head light.

A reflector for a vehicular headlamp in which glare formed by light reflected from a stepped part at the boundary of the adjacent segments constituting a reflector is reduced. Of the distribution control segmental areas on the reflecting surface, a first reflecting area consisting of an aggregation of hyperbolic paraboloid segments forms a pattern widely diffused in the horizontal direction. Second reflecting areas each consisting of elliptic paraboloid segments form a pattern contributing to the formation of the luminous-intensity center of a distribution pattern. A third reflecting area consisting of an aggregation of paraboloid-of-revolution segments forms a pattern contributing to the formation of a cut line tilted a given angle with respect to the horizontal line in the distribution pattern of a passing beam. The focal distance of the reference surface for the paraboloid-of-revolution surface changes for each segment. The focal distance becomes smaller the higher the segment location is on the reflecting surface, and the farther the distance of the reflecting segment from the vertical plane including the optical axis the greater the focal distance.

A headlight exclusively for irradiating a light beam for a vehicle passing by in the opposite direction includes a light source and a reflective mirror as essential components. The reflective mirror has a first reflective surface having a contour of revolving parabolic plane on an upper half of the reflective mirror, a second reflective surface having a contour of revolving parabolic plane arranged at the central part of a lower half of the reflective mirror, and two reflective surfaces each having a contour of a cylindrical parabolic plane arranged on the opposite side of the second reflective surface on the lower half of the reflective mirror. The last-mentioned reflective surfaces comprise a first surface and a second surface. The first surface serves to allow the light beam to be converged in the shape of substantially parallel light beam as seen in one direction, and the second surface serves in the same manner as the first surface in another direction at a right angle relative to the former. The headlight may be designed in the upside-down relationship relative to the aforementioned headlight such that all of the essential components are arranged upside down.

A vehicle headlamp reflector comprises a dished body having a generally rectangular front opening and a bulb-receiving rear opening. The body is internally reflective and includes a first pair of laterally disposed reflective portions, a second pair of laterally disposed reflective portions, an upper reflective portion and a lower reflective portion. The portions are disposed inwardly of the respective portions, are on opposite sides of the opening and between the portions. The portions lie on the same paraboloidal surface while the portions lie on a different paraboloidal surface. The two paraboloid surfaces have common axes and common foci but the focal length of the paraboloidal surface in respect of the portions is less than the other paraboloidal surface.
