An apparatus for supporting a solar collector unit comprises a pair of spaced carriers, and a support net for supporting a solar collector unit thereon. The support net includes a set of longitudinal wires extending between the carriers, and a set of transverse wires extending in a direction transverse to the longitudinal wires and welded thereto. A pair of tension mechanisms are mounted to the carriers to adjust the tension of the longitudinal wires. The tension mechanisms include holders for holding opposite ends of the longitudinal wires between the carriers, and fasteners operatively associated with the holders to adjust the tension of the longitudinal wires so that the longitudinal wires are aligned in a transverse direction.

A flexible tie-down device is provided for attaching a swimming pool-type solar water panel to a roof or other structure. The device is adapted for use with a solar panel having at least one elongate solar panel array formed of a number of side-by-side connected, small diameter, flexible elastomeric, heat transfer tubes, which are attached in fluid flow relationship at one end to a rigid, larger diameter tubular, unheated water inlet manifold and at the other end to a rigid, larger diameter tubular heated water outlet manifold. The tie-down device comprises a plurality of flexible elastromeric tubes connected in a side-by-side relationship to form a device array, the tubes having a length enabling the device array to bend around the outside of either of the inlet and outlet manifolds with the end regions of the device extending outwardly in a parallel, overlapping relationship relative to one another. A lag screw is provided for passing through a retainer clip and the overlapping end regions of the device array and for extending into an existing roof structure. The tie-down device is sized so that when the device is installed around either of the inlet and outlet manifolds and is attached to an existing structure, the manifold is permitted to move sideways in the device a distance equal to at least about the radius of the manifold. Preferably, the tubes forming the device array are the same as the tubes used in the solar panel array so that the device array can expand and contract in unison with the solar array.

Disclosed is a solar collector comprising a membrane for concentrating sunlight, a plurality of elongated structural members for suspending the membrane member thereon, and a plurality of control members for adjustably tensioning the membrane member, as well as for controlling a focus produced by the membrane members. Each control member is disposed at a different corresponding one of the plurality of structural members. The collector also comprises an elongated flexible tensioning member, which serves to stretch the membrane member and to thereafter hold it in tension, and a plurality of sleeve members, which serve to provide the membrane member with a desired surface contour during tensioning of the membrane member. The tensioning member is coupled to the structural members such that the tensioning member is adjustably tensioned through the structural members. The tensioning member is also coupled to the membrane member through the sleeve members such that the sleeve members uniformly and symmetrically stretch the membrane member upon applying tension to the tensioning member with the control members.

The invention comprises a solar assembly for heating a stove with solar energy. The assembly includes a foundation pipe having an opening. A substantially vertical pipe is positioned in the opening and the vertical pipe is capable of rotation relative to the foundation pipe. A stove is releasably attached to the vertical pole. A downward sloping arm is fixed to the top end of the vertical pole. A vertical adjustment member is slidably positionable on the downward sloping arm. The vertical adjustment member is capable of adjustment in height. A frame supporting a solar lens is pivotally attached to the vertical adjustment member. The vertical adjustment member is used to adjust the frame, and the solar lens, so that the solar lens directs solar energy to the stove. It is also contemplated that a solar panel or solar collector be positioned in place of the solar lens.

A mirror assembly for use with a focusing or concentrating solar collector or the like has rows and columns of individual rectangular mirrors mounted by means of flexible cords passing through eyelets on the edges of each of the mirrors, with the cords secured to an open rectangular frame. The cords are selectively tensioned; and when the cords are under tension, all of the mirrors are maintained in a substantially flat orientation in a plane parallel to the plane of the frame. The frame is secured to the top of a support structure which has mirror mounts located beneath each of the mirrors in the mirror assembly. Magnets are provided of on the side of the mirrors which face the underlying support structure; and when the tension in the cords is released, the mirrors drop into place on top of each of the mirror mounts of the support structure, and are held in place by means of the magnets. The angular orientation of the mirrors then is controlled by the operation of the solar collector mechanism. Subsequent retensioning of the cords overcomes the magnetic attraction of the mirrors to the mirror mounts; and the mirrors are removed from the support structure and held in place on the frame by means of the flexible cords. The entire frame of mirrors then may be removed for subsequent storage or replacement.

A wind resistant, two axis tracker is used to direct a solar reflector, heliostat, or dish antenna. An elevation drive ring is supported in a vertical orientation by dolly wheels rotatably attached to a base. The reflector is attached at two points along the circumference of the elevation drive ring. In the prreferred embodiment, a reflector having a diameter slightly less than the inside diameter of the elevation drive ring is mounted to the elevation drive ring. A number of support members, such as cables, extend from the elevation drive ring to the periphery of the reflector. Azimuth adjustment is either provided by incorporating a horizontal turntable or drive ring as part of the base, or by pivoting the reflector within the elevation drive ring by adjusting the respective lengths of the support cables extending laterally from the elevation drive ring to the periphery of the reflector.

A space deployable solar energy concentrator is formed of a dome-shaped arrangement of compactly stowable flat panel segments mounted on a collapsible, space-deployable support structure of interconnected linear components. The support structure is comprised of a plurality of tensioned, curvilinear edge strips which extend in a radial direction from a prescribed vertex of a surrounding umbrella-like framework of radially extending rib members. Between a respective pair of radially-extending, curvilinear edge strips an individual wedge-shaped panel section is formed of a plurality of multi-segment lens panel strips each of which is supported in tension between the pair of edge strips by a pair of circumferentially extending catenary cord members connected to a pair of ribs of the surrounding umbrella-like framework. A respective lens panel strip is comprised of a plurality of flat, generally rectangular-shaped, energy-directing panels arranged side-by-side in the circumferential direction of the dome. Adjacent panels are interconnected by flexible U-shaped hinges which overlap opposing edges of adjacent panels and engage respective cylindrically-shaped, load distribution bars that slide within the flexible hinges. Because each U-shaped hinge is flexible, it is permitted to shift in the circumferential direction of the panel section to facilitate stowage and deployment of the dome.

A compression frame is mounted to the supporting surface, and tension members extend laterally from the frame in opposite directions to the supporting surface. The solar panels are attached to one of the tension members in a fashion which allows the solar panel to rotate and so that the panels can follow the sun throughout the day.
