A point focus distributed receiver system for generating high-pressure steam by means of solar energy collection is disclosed. The cradle within which a gimbal mounted concentrator dish rotates is designed to withstand high wind forces by delivering all forces along the polar axis to the equatorial end of the cradle, requires only one structural member to withstand flexural forces and provides an unobstructed volume behind the axis of rotation for the concentrator dish to rotate in. The concentrator dish comprises a plurality of segments whose bracing forms a tee-pee-like structure behind the dish. The receiver of the present invention further discloses a receiver cavity which achieves maximum blackness in a minimum depth and volume, a combined heat shield/secondary reflector and a plumbing system which permits the receiver system to operate successfully when the concentrator dish is nearly perpendicular to the ground.

A solar energy powerplant has a group of tall, vertical towers open at both ends and containing a plurality of wind-powered impellers mounted in vertically spaced locations within each tower, such that thermal updrafts in the tower drives the impellers. Vertically spaced, radially projecting heating chambers are mounted externally on each tower and each chamber has an air inlet to admit ambient air and an air outlet into the tower for heated air. The heated air entering the tower for the solar heating chambers forms an updraft for powering the impellers. The heating chambers also contain heat exchange tubes which connect with an insulated water reservoir in the base for the towers.

A solar collector having a central radiation receiver and a plurality of mirrors mounted on articulated mounting structures arranged over a surface in an array pattern comprised of discrete paths, with the path shapes having certain prescribed symmetry properties. Using mathematical properties of tilt angle components expressed relative to fixed orthogonal axes of resolution for mirrors oriented to reflect solar radiation onto the radiation receiver, mirror control is accomplished by the use of coupling devices which extend along the discrete mirror containing paths. Each coupling device comprises a passive linear series system having an appropriate gradient of component values. The types of linear series coupling devices specifically considered in the disclosure are tensile elastic coupling devices and electrically resistive coupling devices for mirror control in large scale collectors, and torsional elastic coupling devices for mirror control in small scale collectors. Direct use of the coupled control information requires the use of unconventional mirror mounts which structurally incorporate the fixed orthogonal axes of resolution as mirror mount axes. The mirrors for large scale collectors are mounted on individual mirror mount structures, and appropriate mirror array patterns may be established on any reasonably smooth terrain. The torsional coupling devices intended for use in small scale collectors are used as structural members in a collective mounting structure for the mirrors as well as serving to couple tilt angle information along the individual coupling devices.

A solar heating assembly includes a fluid receiver movable between a thermally insulated compartment and a transparent enclosure for exposure to the rays of the sun. The transparent enclosure is adjacent the reflecting surface of a reflector for focusing the rays of the sun on the fluid receiver. An insulated door is pivotally connected to the thermally insulated compartment and is movable between a position permitting communication between the thermally insulated compartment and the transparent enclosure and a position thermally sealing the insulated compartment. The receiver engages the insulated door for pivoting the door open as the receiver moves from the insulated compartment to the transparent enclosure, and a cable guided by a series of pulleys connects the receiver to the door for closing the door as the receiver moves from the transparent enclosure to the insulated compartment. A thermally actuated detent member retains the receiver in the transparent enclosure unless the ambient temperature falls below a predetermined level. A tilting mechanism tilts the reflector about a horizontal axis to follow the rise and fall of the sun, and a turntable for rotating the receiver and reflector follows the travel of the sun across the sky and cooperates with the tilting mechanism in tilting the reflector. A season adjustment mechanism is associated with the tilting mechanism to provide different degrees of tilting for different seasons.
