摘要:
A can curing oven including a housing assembly, a transfer assembly, and a number of heating units. The housing assembly defines a generally enclosed space. The transfer assembly is structured to support and move a number of can bodies. The transfer assembly includes an elongated transfer belt. The transfer belt is movably coupled to the housing assembly and is structured to move through the housing assembly enclosed space. The number of heating units are structured to generate an effective amount of received heat.

Apparatus for radiation curing of decorative and protective coatings on the exterior of a can or other tubular article is constructed with a plurality of ultraviolet lamps, each of which is disposed between two runs or flights of a conveyor chain having pins that carry the articles so that each article makes two passes at each lamp to receive radiation therefrom on opposite sides of each article. Two runs of the chain are at right angles to another two runs thereof so that curing radiation impinges on the entire outer surface of the tubular article. Each lamp is disposed within an individual baffle unit including a stationary shield that surrounds a cylindrical shutter that is pivotable about its cylindrical axis between normal and standby positions. In the normal position, diametrically opposed windows of the shutter are aligned with diametrically opposed windows of the shield so that radiation from a single lamp is directed toward two flights of the conveyor chain. In the standby position, radiation opaque portions of the shutter are aligned with the windows of the shield to block radiation from reaching outside the baffle unit.

Apparatus for using radiant energy to cure inked or coated objects such as containers in which the objects are rotated and revolved at least part of the way around a linear energy source. A reflector is provided which focuses the energy on the surface of the rotating object and tracks it in its revolution around the energy source.

An ultraviolet light curing apparatus for curing inks and other coatings on cans and similar containers in which the cans are passed by a conveyor about a source of ultraviolet light and, as the cans rotate about the source, they receive virtually all the light rays from the ultraviolet light source by means of the ultraviolet light being reflected by reflectors rotating circumferentially around the light source.

A system for successively curing resinous printing or coatings about the exterior of tubular articles with ultraviolet radiation. A housing is provided having inlet and outlet openings for an endless chain having transversely extending stationary pins. The chain is directed by guide rollers over a sprocket wheel located concentric with an elongated ultraviolet lamp. The axis of the lamp and pins extend parallel to each other so that when the tubular articles are placed on the pins and conveyed around the wheel, a major portion of all the U.V. radiation emitted is utilized for curing and all surfaces of the tube exterior are exposed. The efficiency of the system is further enhanced with the use of a radiation reflector shield positioned radially outward from the sprocket wheel. The system includes a cooling means to remove heat from the housing generated by the ultraviolet lamp.

A pin oven for curing a decorative or other coating laid down by a rotary decorator on cans has an associated transfer device by which the cans are decelerated and transferred in succession from the decorator onto the chain of the oven. The chain carries two cows of pins which are arranged in staggered and offset relation. By operating at a smaller chain circulating speed than the can output velocity of the decorator, the oven provides benefits in the size and thermal efficiency of the oven and reduced chain wear.

Cylindrical two-piece cans are decorated with thermally curable inks and coatings and are placed on generally horizontally extending pins of a pin-chain conveyor. The cans are then moved through a flame drying chamber to dry the inks and coatings by direct impingement of flame on the can surface. The cans are thereafter moved through a cooling chamber and then are discharged from the pin-chain conveyor which circulates back to the decorator unit to receive newly decorated cans. The pins of the pin-chain conveyor can be at an angle to the horizontal and the pins can have brushes or the like to grip the internal surface of the can. The flame dryer unit consists of gas and air-fed burner heads disposed in one of several different patterns along the path taken by the cans through the flame dryer housing. Flame impinges directly on the can and the can moves through the tunnel at a speed sufficient to prevent heat damage to the can. A programmable controller controls the number of burners in use at any one time and the individual thermal output of any burner as a function of the speed of the can or pin chain conveyor through the oven.

Disclosed herein is a method and apparatus for curing inks and decorative coatings on containers, particularly cans having a cylindrical body and closed end, the opposite end being open. The apparatus comprises a peg-chain type conveyor on which cans are mounted and rotated while being carried past an ultra violet light assembly including a lamp tube, reflector and mounting frame disposed at an angle to the path of movement of the conveyor. The peg construction comprises a center pin and a sleeve rotatably mounted on the pin. Rotation of the sleeve transmits rotary motion to the container mounted on the peg. The method comprises the application of an ultra violet sensitive coating to cans, placing a coated container on a peg of a chain conveyor, and transmitting rotary motion to the can while subjecting the container to a band of concentrated ultra violet light beamed on the rotated container in a helical pattern while it is moving past the light assembly.
