摘要: An electrically energized aluminum melting furnace comprises a vessel for supporting molten aluminum and a roof and upper wall structure cooperating with side walls of the vessel to define a heating chamber above the molten aluminum. A plurality of unshielded resistance heating elements are supported by the roof and upper wall structure above the molten aluminum. The molten aluminum has access through a submerged opening to a charging well to which unmelted aluminum is periodically charged without danger that molten aluminum will splash upon the heating elements. Heat conducted from the heating chamber through the body of molten aluminum residing in the vessel is utilized to melt in the charging well the aluminum charged thereto. The melted aluminum in the charging well is permitted to flow through the heating chamber and through a submerged opening to a hot metal well from which hot metal may be withdrawn by any of numerous techniques. The heating chamber is so arranged that an oxide skin is preserved at the surface of the molten aluminum residing within the heating chamber, the oxide skin effecting an efficient transfer of radiant energy received from the resistance heating elements to the molten aluminum. The aforementioned roof and upper wall structure is rested upon furnace walls so as to allow a vertical growth of the furnace walls.

摘要: A silicon smelting furnace and a process for utilizing this furnace for the production of silicon is described. The process involves a process in which equilmolar proportions of silicon carbide and silicon dioxide are charged to the reaction zone of a silicon furnace. Above the furance is placed a shaft containing particulate carbon in the amount of 2 moles of carbon per mole of silicon dioxide charged to the reaction zone. As energy is applied to the reaction zone, molten silicon, gaseous silicon monoxide, and gaseous carbon monoxide are formed, the gases passing through the shaft of carbon, converting the carbon to silicon carbide. The silicon carbide, so formed, is combined with an equimolar proportion of silicon dioxide, and the cycle is repeated. Aside from an initial charge of silicon carbide, the feeds to the smelting furnace are silicon dioxide and carbon, silicon carbide being formed concurrently in a bed of carbon separated from the furnace reaction zone during the smelting cycle.

摘要: A furnace to contain molten zinc, molten aluminum, or other molten metal has an outer vessel, an inner vessel, and particulate matter packed therebetween so as to enable the inner vessel to be lifted readily from the outer vessel. Electrical conductors are imbedded in said matter and arranged to close an electrical circuit including a signalling means if bridged by any molten metal leaking from the inner vessel. The furnace is provided with a removable bonnet, a beam mounted across the inner vessel, and a partition mounted to and beneath the beam so as to extend into the molten metal deeply. The inner and outer vessels, the removable bonnet, and the beam are insulative. The partition is a good conductor of heat.

摘要: A ladle (1) comprising a main portion (5), an outlet (3) and an inductor assembly (2) fitted onto the main portion. The main portion comprises a cavity (13) defined by a refractory lining, provided with at least one opening (21) and shaped so that no pockets of molten metal remain after pouring. Consequently, the metal flows more readily, and hot deslagging and metal temperature measurement are made easier. The ladle is useful for maintaining the temperature of high melting point metals such as steel or superalloys for processes requiring metal sampling.

摘要: A heat conductor for floating on molten metal in a metal melting furnace to forestall the formation of metal oxide dross on the molten metal surface and for passing heat into the molten metal bath. The heat conductor may be partially hollowed out to enable it to float on the lighter molten metals and, in one form, comprises an open-top, boxlike structure having a floor formed of corrugations forming interior and exterior transfer fins. The heat conductor is preferably formed of silicon carbide which is an excellent heat transmitter and will not pass into or combine chemically with the molten metal to form an alloy or compound therewith.

摘要: In a method of melting metal of a predetermined liquidus temperature, particularly a non-iron metal, such as magnesium, in a heated melting chamber into which solid metal is introduced and where a stream is generated, the parameters of flow are chosen such that the melting time is, in maximum, half the melting time without this stream under the condition that the temperature of the molten metal, when measured at at least one place in a distance of 5 mm in maximum from the solid metal, does not fall below liquidus temperature. To this end, an apparatus may be provided comprising at least one pump in a melting chamber having an associated heating device. This pump sucks the melt through at least one inlet opening and discharges the melt through at least one outlet opening. Both inlet opening and outlet opening are arranged within the melt bath of the melting chamber.
