Abstract:
A method for roll-forming a tubular member is provided. The method includes providing a roll-forming machine having a pair of rollers and a forming roller adjacent the pair of rollers. Further, cutting a strip of sheet metal to form a segment having free leading and trailing ends extending between a predetermined length; feeding the segment between the pair rollers; calculating the thickness of the segment via feedback from the pair of rollers; automatically adjusting the position of the forming roller in response to the determined thickness of the segment; advancing the segment between the pair of rollers and against the forming roller to form an annulus; and forming a weld joint between the free ends.
Abstract:
An apparatus comprises one or more pairs of mutually coaxial and opposing linear measuring devices including movable, biased fingers for simultaneously determining the thickness and warpage of a substrate such as a circuit board passing between the fingers. Each measuring device is calibrated to a zero point by bringing the ends of the movable fingers together and recording the distance or position thereof. Data for computation of substrate thickness and warpage measurements is obtained by recording displacement distances or positions of the movable fingers in contact with opposing surfaces of the substrate with respect to the zero point, the thickness and warpage then being calculated. The apparatus may be integrated with an assembly line, including incorporation with an existing piece of equipment, so that substrates exhibiting out-of-specification thickness or excessive warpage may be reworked, discarded or downgraded during the manufacturing process.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a measuring device, which allows the thickness of an elongated, panel-type workpiece, lying on a reference plane and traveling along the reference plane, to be continuously recorded. The measuring device is provided with a guide shoe, which is bath-shaped and open at the top and is pivotally mounted in a machine frame on parallelogram-shaped steering elements. A measuring roller, which projects slightly out of a cavity in a base section that runs parallel to the reference plane, is located inside the guide shoe. The measuring roller is supported in the interior of the guide shoe by rollers on both sides of the recess. The measuring roller is in contact with the reference plane and after a deflection of the guide shoe, comes into contact with the measuring surface of the workpiece, a measured value that represents the thickness being derived from the deflection.

Abstract:
A caliper gauge for moving sheet material such as paper which measures the thickness of the paper accommodates bumps or holes in the paper by providing at least one side of the caliper gauge with a long continuous smooth arm which because of its mounting in close proximity to the moving sheet, which is partially made possible by the use of air bearings for the upper and lower portions of the gauge, provides a gradual wedge-shaped opening which thus allows the transfer of the momentum of the bump or hole in the paper to gradually overcome the inertia of the measuring arm which is pushed away from the paper. The arm itself is made of a single piece of sapphire and is universally pivoted by the use of a polyimide material adhered to the top of the arm which gives the arm at least 2.degree. of dimensional freedom while still maintaining it aligned in the moving direction of the paper.
Abstract:
A system can detect leading and trailing edges of documents, and document thickness with a single transducer. The transducer operates to measure the displacement of an idler pinch roller by a passing document.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a wall thickness measuring device for pipes and the like, more particularly of extruded plastics, having a measuring head (15) connected to measuring and supply leads. The measuring head is mounted to be reversed around an opening of passage A for the pipe to be measured by means of a guide (14) attached to a frame having the opening of passage. The measure and supply leads (22-25) are acommodated in two guide chains (20, 21) which extend in opposite directions, partly on an inner guideway (18) and the other part on a guideway (19), connected thereto, of a guide core member (17). The guide core member (17) is basically constructed in the form of a portion of a circle and is disposed concentrically of the opening of passage (5) and can be moved therearound. Ends (26, 27) of the part of the guide chains (20, 21) disposed on the outer guideway (19) are coupled to a fixed point of the guide (14), the ends (28, 29) of the parts of the guide chains (20, 21) disposed on the inner guideway (18) being coupled to the movable measuring head (15).
Abstract:
The thickness of a single faced corrugated web is sensed by a flexible resilient member in contact with the corrugated side of the web while the smooth side of the web is in contact with a preheat drum. A frame is supported for movement toward and away from the drum and has said resilient member mounted thereon for contacting a plurality of adjacent corrugations and a sensing member which is movable in response to the contact member. A sensor cooperates with the sensing member to generate a signal.
Abstract:
A contacting caliper gauge measures the thickness of a sheet material moving from the anterior to the posterior of the gauge. The gauge has two matched heads, one to either side of the sheet. Each head has a base, a skid and a bellow. The skid is hinged to the anterior of the base and is between the base and the sheet. The other end of the skid is attached to a bellow. The bellow is also attached to the posterior of the base and is substantially perpendicular to the sheet. A cap is attached to the bellow. The cap has a surface parallel to the sheet near the posterior and rounded near the anterior. The two heads are positioned with the bellow of one in line with the bellow of the other. In a preferred embodiment, the gauge further comprises means for permitting the skid of each head to rotate about an axis which is substantially perpendicular to the hinge near the anterior of the base.
