Apparatus comprising an antenna switch (601) configured to select at least one antenna; and a controller (205b). The controller is configured to control the antenna switch in a first mode of operation and a second mode of operation. The first mode of operation is where the apparatus is configured to communicate with a further apparatus. The second mode of operation is where the apparatus is configured to perform a direction finding.

Methods and apparatus are provided for locating one among many items equipped with RFID tags. The apparatus comprises a portable system interrogating the RFID tags and receiving responses therefrom that depend at least on their bearing angle. A comparator selects responses from the one item and ignores others. An annunciator indicates the presence of the one item in the interrogator field of view and, desirably but not essentially, its relative proximity. A directional antenna whose beam pattern is limited in azimuth and/or elevation provides bearing angle information. Its field of view becomes progressively smaller as the antenna approaches the one item so that a user can substantially pinpoint its location without needing any of the usual RFID infrastructure. Tag response hit rate and/or signal strength provides range related information to the interrogator. Optionally, the presence of each new tag is announced until all new tags have been identified.

The present invention relates to a system and method for monitoring a non-tracking satellite antenna terminal's pointing accuracy in three situations. First, the pointing accuracy is monitored after initial installation of the antenna within a geo-synchronous satellite communications system. Secondly, the method is employed to determine mis-pointing of the antenna terminal as a result of a long term event such as building settlement. Lastly, the method is employed to detect mis-pointing of the non-tracking antenna terminal due to a short term event, such as an earthquake, wind storm, or hurricane.

The range from which transponder replies can be received at a virtual secondary surveillance radar of the type described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,115,771 is extended by replacing the omnidirectional antenna previously utilized to receive replies from transponders within the range of the SSR with a stationary array of a plurality of directive antennas arranged in a circle and having radiation patterns pointing in different directions from the center of and covering a respective sector of the circle, and sequentially switching on the antenna of the array covering the sector in which the rotating beam of the associated SSR is then pointing. In an arrangement in which the SSR and PSSR are so widely separated that in certain pointing directions the SSR beam overlies more than one sector of the antenna array, the antennas are sequentially switched on at calculated switching times determined from the pointing direction of the SSR beam and the times it takes in the geometrical arrangement between the SSR beam and the radiation patterns of the antennas of the array, for a given SSR interrogating pulse to propagate, from launch, along the beam until it reaches the line separating the first encountered sector from the next adjacent sector, between second and third sectors, and so on, such that a high gain directive antenna is always pointing in the proper direction to receive reply signals from a transponder intercepted by the scanning beam of the SSR.

A radio frequency signal direction finding system wherein radio frequency signals received at output ports of a multibeam array antenna are sequentially sampled, in response to a sampling signal, at a frequency f.sub.s. The sampled signals are fed to a receiver channel which is tuned to the sampling frequency to produce a composite signal having a frequency f.sub.s and a phase angle, relative to a reference phase angle of the sampling signal, which provides an indication of the relative signal levels received at the output ports and hence an indication of the angular direction of a source of the radio frequency signals.

A direction finder having an antenna system adapted to receive signals and provided with a right-hand and a left-hand lobe system. By coupling means said lobe systems can be made alternately operative. A comparison means is arranged for comparing received signals. Said coupling means is arranged to make operative only when main antenna and a first comparison means is adapted to compare the signal intensity in the right-hand lobe system with the signal intensity of said main antenna. A first indicator is arranged to be activated as soon as the signal intensity of the main antenna exceeds the signal intensity of one of the lobe systems. A second comparison means is arranged to compare signal intensities received on the right-hand and left-hand lobe systems. A second indicator is arranged to indicate the output signals of said second comparison means. Said right-hand and left-hand lobes comprising said lobe systems are arranged to partly overlap each other so that the maximum common signal intensity received exceeds the corresponding signal intensity received on the main antenna in the same direction.

An electronic device is disclosed. The electronic device comprises an antenna module, a direction detecting module and a signal processing module. The antenna module is provided for communicating with a wireless communication device. The direction detecting module is provided for detecting strength of N wireless signals that the antenna module received from a first offset angle to N-th offset angle with respect to the wireless communication device to determine a directivity of the wireless communication device, in which N is a positive integer larger than 1. The signal processing module is provided for comparing the offset angles corresponding to the strength of the N wireless signals at the directivity of the wireless communication device with a look-up table for obtaining an angle of the wireless communication device with respect to the electronic device.

Systems, apparatuses, devices, and methods for wireless communications. An antenna in which nulls or directions of reduced performance can be selectively introduced is provided, and the performance of a communication link to a wireless communication device is monitored. By correlating the selectively reduced sensitivity of the antenna with reductions in the communication link performance, the direction of the wireless communication device may be estimated. Embodiments of the present invention may be used in numerous applications, such as cell phones, PDA's, and laptops.
