Abstract: An autonomous sensor node for undersea seismic surveying is formed as a sphere with density similar to sea water in order to minimize effects of noise. The node is capable of measuring both seismic pressure waves and water-borne particle velocity in three dimensions. The node floats above the seafloor to greatly decrease the impact of shear wave noise contamination generated by seabed waves. The node is attached to an anchor resting on the seabed by a tether. The tether is configured to prevent transfer of any tensile forces caused by shear waves in the seabed stratum from the anchor to the node. The tether may have a varying density along its length to entirely attenuate any force transfer from the seafloor.

Abstract: A method for verticalizing recorded seismic data, the method including recording first data with a particle motion sensor, wherein the particle motion sensor is located on a streamer, and the particle motion sensor is configured to be insensitive to a direct current, recording second data with a gravity motion sensor, wherein the gravity motion sensor is also located on the stream, and the gravity motion sensor is configured to be sensitive to the direct current and temporally synchronous to the particle motion sensor, selecting a cost function that associates corresponding values of the first data and the second data, determining a misalignment angle from maximizing the cost function, wherein the misalignment angle describes a misalignment between corresponding axes of the particle motion sensor and the gravity motion sensor, and correcting seismic data recorded by the particle motion sensor based on the misalignment angle so that the corrected seismic data is verticalized with regard to gravity.

Abstract: Techniques are disclosed relating to geophysical analysis. In one embodiment, a method includes receiving seismic data for a geophysical formation recorded during a seismic survey using one or more seabed sensors and one or more sources. In this embodiment, the method includes determining a seismic gather for a location in the geophysical formation, modifying the seismic gather by interchanging source-receiver definitions for the seismic gather, and imaging the location using the modified gather. In this embodiment, the imaging uses higher-order reflections recorded in the seismic gather. In some embodiments, the method includes separating up-going and down-going wavefields and separately imaging using the up-going wavefield and the down-going wavefield.
