The invention relates to an indoor wring optical cable. It has the advantages of softness, lightness, good mechanic performance, anti-bent, anti-flexibility, anti-strain, anti-impact, anti-extrusion, anti-corrosion and easy to operation, move and construction. It can resist the radiation of outer high electromagnetism field on interfering signal transmitted in the optical fiber and resist the OH-group of water in moisture air resulting in direct corrosion damage on optical fiber. It also has the performance of flame-retardant.

A U-shaped universal ground assembly with oversheath protection for use in grounding a cable, the grounding clip having a ground `block` including a framework with a generally open end and a spaced closed end. The framework includes a pair of bifurcated leg members extending from the open end of the framework toward the closed end thereof. An arcuate toothed portion is formed as a lower grip member at the closed end of the framework, and an opposed upper grip member, slidably positioned on the framework, is adapted to be moved toward the closed end of the framework. The grounding block also includes a wire retainer pivotally and slidably supported on the open end of the framework and adapted to be moved into a generally closed position across the open end of the framework. At least one ground wire opening is defined in the framework, and at least one ground wire opening is defined in the wire retainer in substantial registry therewith.

A method of installing an optical cable in an overhead power transmission line by supporting an optical cable, which has an overall protective sheath of electrically insulating material, in long lengths between towers employed to support at least one electric power transmission line which is on load and, after the optical cable has been so installed and while the overhead electric power transmission line is on load, providing on or in the supported optical cable at least one longitudinally continuous path which extends throughout substantially the whole length of the supported optical cable and which is sufficiently electrically conductive to carry along the cable any currents that may be capacitively induced. The method enables a cable that will not be subject to dry-band arcing to be installed without danger to personnel during installation.

In an overhead optical transmission system in which an optical cable is freely supported between towers employed to support overhead electric power transmission lines and in which each end of the suspended length of optical cable is secured to a tower by means of a metal termination fitting which surrounds and is clamped on a part of a length of the optical cable at or near this end, each metal termination fitting of the cable over a part of the length of the fitting extending to the end of the fitting remote from the tower and an immediately adjacent part of the length of the optical cable are surrounded by a shield of an electrically conductive metal or of a semi-conductive plastics material sufficiently conductive to reduce arcing and/or joule heating. Preferably, a preformed helix constituting a damper extends lengthwise of the shield and may extend lengthwise of the part of the length of the fitting, the overall outer diameter of the preformed helix over a part of its length remove from the fitting increasing smoothly in a direction away from the fitting. Where the shield is a preformed helix of a semi-conductive plastics material, the preformed helix may be so shaped over a part of its length remote from the fitting that the preformed helix serves the dual purposes of a shield and a damper.

A central core including at least one optical fiber is surrounded by a layer of non-conductive stranded strength members that are wound about the core. The core includes a plurality of pliable buffer tubes, each of which houses a bundle of optical fibers. The buffer tubes are helically wound about a cylindrical element in order to provide temperature performance by preventing the buffer tubes from experiencing thermally induced movement when exposed to varying temperatures. Each of the stranded strength members comprises a bundle of non-conducting filaments or fibers that are encapsulated by individual polyethylene jackets. The stranded strength members are helically wound about the central core. An outer protective jacket is formed about the stranded strength members and encloses the entire cable.

In addition to the mechanical stresses caused by wind, icing, etc., the manufacturer of an optical aerial cable has to consider the electrical stress mechanisms (corona discharge, nulltrackingnull effect) which lead to premature aging of the outer jacket by considering constructive measures and the use of special jacket materials. The outer jacket of the aerial cable contains several PE fusible fibers embedded into the jacketing material, whose conductivity is based on the content of carbon black in the amount of 10% of weight to 40% of weight. The resistance of these fusible fibers manufactured by coextrusion with the outer jacket is sufficiently low at 105 null/m-109 null/m, to discharge the induced electrical charges to the anchoring spirals fastened to the pole. No large potential differences in the longitudinal direction of the cable can occur on the wet, only partially dried jacket surface.

At least the outwardly projecting portion of the outwardly projecting strand is composed of an organic material. The outwardly projecting strand has a projection height H within a range defined as 1.5 mm≦H≦7.0 mm. By setting the projection height H of the outwardly projecting strand equal to or larger than 1.5 mm, the wind noise characteristic can be conspicuously improved. Further, by setting H≦7.0 mm, the outwardly projecting strand comprised by an organic material is made easily crushable, so the gripping portions of spacers, dampers, and other parts which have been conventionally used can be used as they are.
