Two crossed electrode assemblies allow the liquid crystal to be made transparent at the points to be displayed. In a driving circuit for a liquid crystal display matrix, a source of a direct or low-frequency voltage is connected to drive the selected row and column electrodes, and a high frequency voltage is connected to the driving circuit so that the high frequency potential is effective in combination with the low frequency or direct voltage at non-frequency voltage is effective at the selected crossovers. The high frequency voltage suppresses changes in the optical properties of the liquid crystal at the non-selected crossovers.

A recording device comprises a display, a photoconductor superposed on the display, and a pair of electrodes disposed on both sides of the display and photoconductor. At least one of the electrodes is divided into sub-electrodes. Information can be written into the recording device by means of light while applying a voltage to each sub-electrode. Therefore, information is not written into part of the recording device corresponding to the sub-element to which no voltage is applied even if extraneous light is applied. As a result a sharp image with no noise can be formed. The recording device also comprises a feed member for applying a voltage to a pair of electrodes of such a recording device, a first light source for writing information in the recording device, and a second light source for reset. Consequently, reset and recording can be done in one cycle.

A fixed bias voltage is applied to the upper transparent electrode, while another voltage is applied to the lower transparent layer. The photosite converts incident light into electrons, and then stores a signal charge produced by the conversion of the incident light. A variation in the stored signal charge varies the voltage applied to the lower transparent layer. Thus, the liquid crystal layer modulates the incident light in response to a variation of the signal charge quantity.

The phase-transition type liquid crystal is selected from a group consisting of (1) a p-type cholesteric liquid crystal and (2) a mixture of p-type cholesteric liquid crystal and p-type nematic liquid crystal. The ferroelectric liquid crystal is selected from a group consisting of (1) a chiral smectic C liquid crystal, (2) a mixture of chiral smectic C liquid crystal and non-chiral smectic C liquid crystal, and (3) a mixture of chiral smectic C liquid crystal and a photoactive material.

A spatial light modulator and a neural network circuit are disclosed. The modulator is used in pattern recognition and has an arrangement in which a photoconductive layer held between conductive electrodes is connected in series to a liquid crystal cell including a liquid crystal layer held between two opposite electrodes. Setting the rate between the area of the photoconductive layer and the area of at least one of the opposite electrodes between which the liquid crystal layer is disposed, provides a highly efficient reflective and transmissive spatial light modulator of a simple structure. Both reflective and transmissive spatial light modulating elements are applied to a neurocomputer or the like.
