A synthetic vision system (SVS) for an aircraft, including a user input device for receiving runway correction commands from a user. The runway correction commands are in response to discrepancies observed by the user between an observed runway position in the real world and a synthetic vision runway position depicted on an electronic display device. The user input device provides runway corrections. An SVS computer is operatively connected to the electronic display device for providing SVS image data to the electronic display device in response to received runway parameter data. A runway parameter server device (RPSD) is operatively connected to the user input device and to the SVS computer for receiving the runway corrections from the user input device and providing the runway parameter data, including any corrected data provided by the user, to the SVS computer. A runway parameter database is operatively connected to the RPSD for receiving correction data from the RPSD and providing corrected data to the RPSD. The user input device provides the capability of stewing the synthetic vision runway position to the observed real-world runway position when the synthetic vision runway position is observed to be misaligned, the corrected data being subsequently used to provide enhanced runway environment information for taxi operations.

A device is disclosed for training pilots by simulating the operation of retractable landing gear in aircraft. The self-contained device can be installed into fixed landing gear aircraft to be used during takeoff and landing. Alternatively, the device can be used during classroom and ground school training. A switch box control panel simulates the landing gear controls and indicators of retractable gear aircraft. A logic circuit and program simulate landing gear operation, in “simulator” mode, and common landing gear errors of retractable gear aircraft in “trainer” mode. In “trainer” mode, the program and circuit also randomly alert the pilot to common landing gear errors and evaluate the pilot's corrective control input, outputting an error indication if the pilot's response is incorrect. The device's capabilities to accept flight control inputs and to emulate characteristics of specific retractable gear aircraft increase the realism of the simulation and training.

A self-contained, landing gear position simulator for use in an aircraft includes first and second panels oriented in different planes. Five lamps and a manually operable switch are mounted on the first panel and four manually operable switches are mounted on the second panel. When the switch on the first panel is moved to a first position to simulate a control action of retracting the aircraft landing gear, a first lamp on the first panel is lighted, and when the switch is moved to a second position to simulate a control action of extending the aircraft''s landing gear, the first lamp is extinguished and second, third and fourth lamps are lighted. When one of the four switches on the second panel is operated, a corresponding one of the first, second, third or fourth lamps is prevented from being lighted. The simulator also includes apparatus responsive to a predetermined air speed indication of the aircraft for lighting a fifth lamp.

An apparatus for displaying state and transition information in a system. A sensor and display system is disclosed for displaying aircraft landing gear status. The system utilizes two light emitting diodes (LEDs) for each landing gear leg to display the current position of each gear leg. One yellow LED indicates gear UP and the second green LED shows gear DOWN position. When the control switch is moved to change the position of the gear, the indicator light which had been lit is extinguished, and the indicator for the desired position begins to flash, indicating gear movement. The indicator will continue to flash until the gear leg has reached the limit of travel, at which time the indicator stops flashing and glows steadily. Each gear leg indicator operates independently of the others, so that proper position of each gear leg can be confirmed and any malfunction can immediately be identified.
