摘要： A data storage apparatus comprises a tape cartridge having a cartridge memory which is configured to store data representing a distinctive identity of the memory and data representing a distinctive identity of the cartridge. The cartridge has a data storage tape storing WORM data in a succession of data sets. Each data set is recorded with data representing a respectively associated data set information table. The data set information table includes an identifying data structure including data representing the identity of the cartridge memory and the data representing the identity of the cartridge. The integrity of all the WORM data written at any point along the tape can be checked against tampering by reference to the data structure that is recorded with each WORM data set.

In another embodiment, optical pipes carry light from an disk drive mounted emitter to a location where the light is detected by the drive such that the light is not mistaken for reflective light. In another embodiment, a light emitting source such as an LED is embedded in a cartridge such that the intensity of light emitted from the LED in cooperation with reflected light is sufficiently intense to identify the cartridge as a valid cartridge. These embodiments may be rotatable so that a single cartridge may be compatible with more than one drive type.

摘要： A recording medium enabling type determination and writing possibility determination for various types of disks. Opening and closing means for opening and closing a detection hole of a cartridge forms a plane substantially horizontal level with a reference plane of the cartridge at a position of the detection hole when the detection hole is in a closed state. The cartridge has at least a first detection hole and a second detection hole formed therein. The second detection hole (H1) is opened and closed by the opening and closing means, and the first detection hole (H0) is in an open state at all times. A disk drive apparatus or a disk determining method determines, together with a disk type, determining information contents (for example writing possibility) based on one or a plurality of detection holes formed in the cartridge, on the basis of an open/closed state of the detection hole and a result of the disk type using a signal based on reflected light from the loaded recording medium.

When the magnetic tape is loaded, the information on the logical beginning of tape position of the magnetic tape is read from the built-in memory.

A planar light shaping optical structure such as a holographic light shaping diffuser (LSD) ruled or blazed diffraction grating, holographic diffraction grating, binary optics or holographic diffraction grating directs light to the detector. The LSD has degrees of angular diffusion in different orthogonal axes. This property makes possible unique identification of different types of cartridges.

摘要： A disc cartridge and corresponding method/system are provided for limiting the number of copies which may be made of software stored on a magnetic disc. A magnetic field generating member is provided within a magnetic disc cartridge, or embedded within a magneto-optical or magnetic disc, so that after copying of the software from the first disc to a second disc, the magnet is energized so as to create an erasing magnetic or electromagnetic field proximate the first disc in order to erase the copied software therefrom, while an anti-copy signal is copied or otherwise sent along with the software from the first disc to the second disc so as to prevent later copying of the software from the second disc. According to certain other embodiments of this invention, a method/system is provided for erasing software from a disc using the above-discussed cartridge after a user attempting to copy the software enters an incorrect password a predetermined number of consecutive times.
