Abstract: A flywheel includes a hub configured to rotate about a longitudinal axis. At least one member having a laminate casing connected to the hub, the laminate casing is formed with an enclosed space for housing at least one mass with a fixed shape. The enclosed space is structured to control radial displacement of the at least one mass. Wherein upon rotation, an operational radial force applies a through thickness laminate radial load to the laminate casing, while simultaneously radially displacing the at least one mass to apply a controllable compressive load on the laminate casing. The applied controllable compressive load increases a predetermined laminate loading capacity by an amount of compressive load counteracting the through thickness laminate radial load, resulting in a corresponding increase in a flywheel angular velocity, that therefore increases an amount of energy stored by the at least one energy storage unit.

Abstract: An energy storage system stores power received from a power grid as potential energy in compressed earth materials. The energy storage system includes a motor-generator coupled to an anchor via a tensile member. The motor-generator is configured to apply a tensile force to the tensile member. The tensile force causes the motor-generator and the anchor to apply a compression force to the earth materials in the ground, and causes the anchor to displace, thereby storing the received power as potential energy. The energy storage system provides power to the power grid by relieving some of the tensile force on the tensile member and thereby relieving some of the compression force on the earth materials. The anchor displaces towards its original position, and thereby causes the motor-generator to generate electrical power from the stored potential energy.

Abstract: The present invention provides novel designs and improved methods for the construction and operation of a gravity powered energy storage facility. This facility might also be called a gravity battery or a gravitational potential energy storage device. The device converts electricity into gravitational potential energy, and vice versa, by raising and lowering massive modules between a higher elevation and a lower elevation. These modules could maximize their mass with weight container units consisting of any heavy medium, such as water, stone, metal, concrete, compacted earth, etc. The present invention includes such designs and design optimizations which can achieve such scale. To accomplish this, the system's height is optimized by utilizing an underground vertical shaft which can provide a large height differential. And the system's weight is optimized by implementing a modular design which can evenly distribute a very large load. This modular design uses multiple tethers, gears, or other supporting elements to evenly distribute the load for modular sections of weight. Further design elements optimize this system for peak performance.
