Transistors can be used for a variety of electronic-based applications. Therefore, transistor efficiency and performance is of importance. An apparatus is presented herein to increase the locking range of transistors by leveraging cross-coupled injection transistors in conjunction with symmetry injection transistors. The transistor efficiency can also be increase by reducing a parasitic capacitance associated with the components of the transistor.

On the other hand, the oscillation signal is synchronized with a frequency modulated RF signal that arrives from outside, the change in frequency caused by the frequency modulation is generated as a change in the drain bias of the high-frequency transistor (1), and reception operation is performed by taking out that change as a voltage amplitude change from the baseband signal output terminal (14). As a result, it is possible to provide a microwave/millimeter wave communication apparatus that is simple in structure, low cost, and low power consumption.

A complex digital phase locked loop for use in a digital demodulator includes a phase detector for producing a phase error indicative of a difference in phase between a complex digital input signal and a complex digital feedback signal. The phase error is input to a controller, which multiplies the phase error by a gain factor selected to stabilize and optimize the phase locked loop and produces an output signal for use in extracting a frequency deviation present in the complex digital input signal. The output signal is also input to a numerically controlled oscillator that tracks the phase of the complex digital input signal based on the output signal and produces the complex digital feedback signal.

A phase modulated wave that may have no carrier power is demodulated by a phase locked loop including a phase detector for deriving an A.C. data output signal having a magnitude and a phase indicative of the phase of the modulated wave. A feedback loop responsive to the data output signal restores power to the carrier frequency component to the loop. In one embodiment, the feedback loop includes a phase modulator responsive to the phase modulated wave and the data output signal. In a second embodiment, carrier frequency power is restored by differentiating the data output signal and supplying the differentiated signal to an input of a voltage controlled oscillator included in the phase locked loop. Preferably, the phase modulator is linear and includes a series inductance-capacitance network, wherein the capacitor is a voltage controlled varactor. To compensate for nonlinearities in the varactor reactance vs. voltage characteristic, the series circuit is shunted by a properly selected inductance.

A narrow band FM system for voice communications demodulates the incoming frequency modulated carrier signal in such fashion that the bandwidth of the demodulating loop decreases as a function of a carrier signal strength. Preceding the demodulator loop is a limiter device which provides a constant power output so that as the signal-to-noise ratio decreases, the carrier signal power output likewise decreases and extends the threshold of the demodulator circuit. The demodulated output signal is modified as to its frequency spectrum to flatten the frequency spectrum of the noise signal output. In the transmitter, the voice signals are modified by a preemphasis circuit which tends to flatten the frequency spectrum of the voice signal prior to modulation and the deemphasis of modifying circuit in the receiver following the demodulator to flatten the frequency spectrum of the noise signal output substantially restores the frequency spectrum of the voice signal. The demodulator is a phase lock loop of linear negative feedback from including a multiplying circuit having the incoming signal and the demodulating signal as inputs thereto and supplying the input to the loop filter amplifier. The dc open loop gain and the transfer function of the loop filter amplifier are chosen to provide the proper frequency response for the loop and to provide an error response below a predetermined frequency which allows a reasonable modulation indice for the frequencies of interest.

The basic variable frequency oscillator circuit includes a transistor connected in a Colpitts configuration. An effective tank circuit capacitance is varied in accordance with a control signal to vary the circuit oscillation frequency. When the effective capacitance is provided by the transistor base-emitter capacitance, the frequency variation may be achieved by varying the transistor emitter current or the collector-base voltage. Alternatively, the effective capacitance may be varied by varying the transconductance of a second transistor coupled in a feedback arrangement with the Colpitts transistor. Frequency modulation may be achieved when a modulating voltage is used as the control signal. Circuit variations involving phase locking of the feedback employing embodiment onto an input signal include a frequency demodulator, a phase modulator and an amplitude modulation limiter. Further variations include a harmonic signal generator and frequency multiplier/divider circuits.
