摘要： Luminance or color modulation of a display screen is used to transfer data to an external receiving device. At least a portion of the display screen is modulated, such as by intensity modulation, to represent a data digit. By using a plurality of intensity levels greater than 2, it is possible to represent data digits having a numerical base greater than 2. For example, providing modulation with ten different intensity levels allows each modulation nulldwellnull to represent a decimal digit. The modulation is sensed by a photodetector in the external receiving device and converted to the corresponding data digit.

摘要： A transducer converts an acoustic signal into a digital pulse code signal through optical encoding techniques. A pulsed light source emits a beam of light along a predetermined path. A digital optical encoder is located in the path and emits a digitally encoded light beam having regions in which light is present and regions in which there is an absence of light. A rotatable mirror which is located in the path of the encoded beam is connected to a diaphragm so that the angle of deflection of the encoded beam is a function of the acoustic signal. An array of digitally encoded photoconductive elements is located in the path of the deflected encoded beam. Threshold circuitry monitors the variation in the resistance of the photoconductive elements and produces an N bit digital pulse code representative of the magnitude and polarity of the acoustic signal during each occurrence of a pulsed light beam.

摘要： An opto-electronic A/D converter includes a tunable laser (10) for wavelength modulating a narrowband coherent electromagnetic beam by the amplitude of the analog signal. A grating (12) transforms the wavelength modulated beam into a corresponding angularly modulated beam. A set of kinoforms (14) diffract the angularly modulated beam into a bundle of diffracted beams. Detectors (18, 20) determine the digital signal by repeatedly sampling the spatial power distribution of the diffracted beams.

摘要： An optical theta-modulation based analog-to-digital converter having an acousto-optic deflector and an analog-to-digital conversion mask, for fast and flexible analog-to-digital conversion. The acousto-optic deflector deflects an optical beam at an angle corresponding to an input voltage signal having an analog value. The analog-to-digital conversion mask converts the deflected optical beam into N masked optical signals which each corresponds to a respective bit of a digital value representing the analog value of the input signal. Each optical signal is detected by a photodetector and converted into an output voltage signal by a comparator.

摘要： Apparatus for providing an absolute indication (that is, an indication which is not lost due to interruption of the supply source) of the position of a movable object, such as a machine tool, by means of a series of binary digital elements extending throughout the range of movement to form a chain-code sequence of dissimilar digital patterns. Each position of the tool is identified in dependence on the particular one of those patterns which is then in registry with a reading head, the identification being in terms of the number of electrical pulses needed to actuate a chain-code generator to produce a similar pattern.
