Digital data is transmitted over partial-response channels using a precoding technique which allows for the use of a wide variety of transmit constellations. A sequence of signal points is selected from a predetermined base constellation meeting particular criteria. A so-called combined signal point is developed for a present symbol interval by a) selecting a signal point from the base constellation as a function of input bits associated with the present symbol interval and b) combining the signal point thus selected with a feedback signal which is a function of one or more combined signal points that were developed for previous symbol intervals, that function being determined by the characteristic of the partial-response channel. A transmit signal which represents the combined signal points is then provided. In one implementation, the processing steps are performed explicitly using an integrated precoder/constellation mapper. In another implementation those steps are performed implicitly using table look-up.

A MODEM has a delay equalizer for receiving a trellis-coded test signal transmitted from an opposite MODEM and compensating for delay distortion of this test signal on the transmission path. The output of this delay equalizer and the input test signal are selectively entered into a demodulator. The output of this demodulator is assigned to predetermined signal point coordinates by a decision circuit. A Viterbi decoder computes a branch metric representing the distance between each assigned point and receive signal point from the output signals of the decision circuit and the demodulator, and figures out the pass metrics of accumulated values based on the branch metrics so computed. A difference signal represents the difference between the maximum and minimum values of the pass metrics from the Viterbi decoder. A first difference signal corresponds to the pass metrics when the delay equalizer is not set for the transmission path, and a second difference signal corresponds to the pass metrics when the delay equalizer is set for the transmission path. A control circuit compares the first and second difference signals and sets the delay equalizer out of the transmission path if the first difference signal is greater than the second, or sets the delay equalizer in the transmission path if the second difference signal is greater than the first. Thus the MODEM automatically decides whether the delay equalizer is to be inserted in the transmission path.

In a multilevel modulator for use in modulating an input digital signal of N levels into a multilevel modulated signal, the input digital signal is converted by a code converting unit into a major converted signal for the input digital signal and a minor converted signal corresponding to the major converted signal. The major converted signal is rearranged into groups each of which consists of a predetermined number of levels smaller than N and which is produced in a time division fashion together with with minor converted signal. A signal producing unit processes each group to produce a Lee-error correcting code sequence. Alternatively, major and minor converted signals are produced on quadrature-phase amplitude modulation of a circular signal arrangement of N-levels to divide the circular signal arrangement into a square signal arrangement and the remaining signal arrangement. In a counterpart multilevel demodulator, an inverse operation is carried out to reproduce the input digital signal.

In other aspects, the constellation of signal points is partitioned into decision subsets, each possible transitions from a possible decoder state are associated with a decision subset, based on the signal points in the path histories, and each of the modified versions is associated with one of the decision subsets; there are fewer modified versions than the number of decoder states; and the decoder states number fewer than the number of decoder states in an optimum trellis decoder.

A family of multi-dimensional convolutionally coded modulation systems achieves enlarged minimum distance between possible sequences of signal points, reduced number of error events with the minimum distance, acceptable peak-to-average power ratio, reduced number of signal points in each constituent two-dimensional constellation, immunity to rapid carrier phase changes, and reduced complexity, resulting in a reduced error probability when maximum likelihood decoding is used.These advantages are achieved by the construction and by the partitioning into subsets of the multi-dimensional constellation, by the design of convolutional codes using those multi-dimensional subsets, by using a bit converter and a block encoder to convert a multi-dimensional constellation mapping into multiple two-dimensional constellations mappings, and by a simplified decoding technique.
