A method for treating and killing lice and lice eggs in hair of a person includes the steps of: combing and ironing the hair of the person using a hand-held flat-iron device. The flat-iron device includes a handle having a first arm and a second arm that is pivotally coupled to the first arm at first ends thereof, wherein in an open position, strands of hair are inserted between the first and second arms. The flat-iron device also includes at least one heat conducting plate that is disposed along an inner surface of one of the first and second arms. The plate is operably coupled to a source of heat for controlled heating of the plate to a temperate of at least 130° F. A first edge of the heat conducting plate extends to within 1 millimeter of a first edge of the arm on which the heat conducting plate is disposed. In a closed position, the strands of hair are pinched and held between the two arms in contact with the heated plate resulting in heat being applied to the hair including within a zone that is less than 5 millimeters from a scalp of the person.

The Federal EPA has consistently limited the use of known toxicants (insecticides) to preclude their admixture into paints and coatings by contractors or homeowners for the purpose of repelling or killing insects on the dried or cured coating. The current invention is a method to repel, rather than kill, insects, arachnids, and other arthropods, utilizing materials taken from the EPA's GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) List, obviating onerous Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) regulations and greatly extending the useful life of the insect-repellant materials by binding them into the dried film solids—greatly slowing their evaporation and degradation and creating a timed release of insect repellant material. Furthermore, the current invention utilizes the insect repellant nature of these materials to repel insects from the surrounding area during coating application, thereby eliminating the need for applying insect repellants, such as DEET, to the skin.

Synthesis of dihydronepetalactone may be achieved by hydrogenation of nepetalactone, the major constituent of catmint essential oils. This compound, which also has fragrance properties, may be used commercially for its insect repellent properties.

The present invention disclosed herein is directed to a natural pest repellent composition and the method for producing such a composition. The composition comprises a mixture herb oils, citrus oils, and wood oils safe for human and pet topical use to repel pests. The composition includes organic and natural materials and is capable of repelling pests such as insects, fleas, flies, mosquitoes, bed bugs, and ticks. The oil extracts from the herbs, citrus, and wood release a repelling agent to discourage the pests. The present invention provides a natural eco-friendly repellent that is pleasant smelling to humans. The present invention is distinctly different from prior art because it does not contain any synthetics, water, or alcohol in the composition.
