摘要: A battery charger is disclosed for recharging reusable batteries in a manner that prevents overcharging of the same. The charger includes a voltage source and non-dissipative shunt arrangement that can be customized to charge any number of batteries. The charger may be a current limiting power supply that is controlled by the voltage or charge state of the batteries being recharged. The non-dissipative shunt includes a pair of transistors for each pair of batteries and an inductor placed one end between the battery pair and another end between the transistor pair. An oscillator, having two phases of equal, but opposite phase, is used to control each transistor to apply charge to a given battery during one phase and then to allow the charge to equalize between the battery pair during the second phase. The equalization is continued until both batteries reach a full charge without overcharging any one battery.

摘要: An automatic electric battery charger which detects when the battery is fully charged by monitoring the rate of rise of battery voltage; when the rate of rise falls below a predetermined value, the charge is terminated. The rate of rise of voltage is detected by comparing an unprocessed battery voltage signal with a signal which follows the battery voltage signal with an exponential lag having a time constant of about 45 minutes. With a low rate of rise of voltage, such as occurs when the battery approaches the fully charged state, the lagging signal will tend to catch up with the unprocessed signal, and when the difference falls below 11 mV per cell, the charged is terminated. In the preferred embodiment, the signal processing is digitally implemented, using a microprocessor.

摘要: A battery charger receives direct current power from an external source through a power connector. Switch means receives the power from the power connector and supplies it to a boost circuit which is removably and conductively connected to a battery. A control circuit is connected to receive a battery voltage signal from the battery and a battery temperature signal from a temperature sensor positioned to detect battery temperature. The control circuit determines the state of charge of the battery from the voltage and temperature signals. The control circuit supplies (1) switching signals to the switch means to cause the switch to be conductive, and (2) boosting signals to the boost circuit to cause the boost circuit to charge the battery in accordance with a preselected charging program related to the state of charge of the battery. A safety circuit may also be adapted to sense unsafe battery and battery charger parameters and cause the control circuit to generate a switching signal to cause the switch means to be nonconductive upon the occurrence thereof. The battery charger is particularly adaptable for use with vehicles.

摘要: A microprocessor controlled battery charger to charge a battery when the charging current is reduced to zero even though the charger is still connected to the battery. The microprocessor includes a means to read the voltage of the battery and also includes a timer. The voltage of the battery is periodically read and when it decreases below a predetermined value the microprocessor again establishes recharging of the battery first at an intermediate rate until either a maximum voltage is reached or a minimum dv/dt is reached and then the current is reduced to a lower current rate for a finishing charge of the battery for a given period of time.

摘要: An improved battery charger circuit for rapidly charing a battery by increasing the rate of battery charge acceptance through periodic battery discharge during the charging process includes a pair of first and second controlled rectifier circuits coupled to an AC source and adapted for coupling to a battery. The first controlled rectifier circuit is rendered conductive during the charging intervals to supply the battery with charge current from the AC source. The second controlled rectifier circuit is rendered conductive during battery discharge intervals to discharge the battery in a substantially lossless manner by conducting battery discharge current through the AC source, thus realizing a highly efficient battery charger.

摘要: A battery charger control system is proposed in which the state of charge of a battery on a charger is assessed by an arrangement which intermittently interrupts the charge which is provided by the charger and during an interruption times a period at the end of which the battery voltage is sensed. Means is provided to then compare the sensed battery voltage which has been sensed earlier in an interruption of the charging current, with a logic circuit arrangement responsive to the result of the comparison for permitting, preventing or modifying the charging current after the interruption.

摘要: A battery charging apparatus has a control circuit which controls the rate of input AC power through a synchronous switch - a saturable core reactor, magnetic amplifier or a pair of antiparallel silicon controlled rectifiers. The operation of the charger is initially constant current, but has a tapered, constant voltage transition to a continuous controlled trickle charge. A monitor and override circuit is timed, and initiates step-function transfers to lower constant current charging rates at various times throughout the charging program if the charging rate at the time of any such step function transfer is higher than the level to which the rate will be transferred. A status indication may be provided if a step transfer occurs.

摘要: A battery charger for charging batteries that may have a nominal rated voltage equal to or greater than the voltage of the source, includes an accumulator of energy such as an inductor which is coupled across the source through a controllable switch for a first selected interval of time. The charger further includes a path between the accumulator of energy and the battery to be charged for the transfer of the stored energy to the battery. The path between the accumulator and the battery advantageously includes a unilateral impedance element having a recovery time such that a discharge path is provided for the battery during a second selected interval of time substantially less than the first selected interval of time.
