Abstract:
A patch plug is provided that has a coating continuous over both the patch and plug portions, providing a strong and continuous seal to prevent seal failure and water and air introduction. The patch and plug portions may be formed separately, each with a coating element, and fused together in a press which bonds the coatings of the patch and plug portions together to form a single, continuous coating. Means known in the art, for example rubber cement, can also be employed to further ensure a firm seal between the patch plug and the tire. Methods of manufacturing and using the patch plug are also taught herein.
Abstract:
Tire patches are described for off-the-road (OTR) tires. At least the base cushion gum layer and the top cushion gum layer include a bis-imide in an effective amount to reduce reversion of the gum rubber composition during repair and during use. The bis-imides are significantly more effective in this application than other reversion inhibitors.
Abstract:
A process for making a sectional repair to a tire which increases the range of repairable injuries and includes a number of steps culminating in a repaired tire. The steps are broadly characterized as preparing the tire (including inspecting the tire and preparing a generally Y-shaped skive), lacing the prepared skive, blocking the base of the skive, filling the skive with a plug of unvulcanized rubber and vulcanizing the plug.
Abstract:
A tool tip is inserted from the inside of the tire into a hole in a tire crown by turning the tool tip as it is pressed against the tire. The tool tip is mounted on a hollow tool having a cylindrical insert receiving chamber. An insert is pushed by a plunger out of the receiving chamber in the hollow tool through a tapered portion into a compression chamber in the tool tip. The compression chamber has a diameter smaller than the diameter of the insert so that when the insert is ejected from the hollow tool it will expand to fill the hole in the tire. The insert is also tapered to engage the tapered portion between the receiving and compression chambers. The plunger has a plunger head with a substantially flat pushing surface and knurled edges which the operator can manually grip and push. The outside of the hollow tool is also shaped for manual gripping to turn the hollow tool and tool tip in the same direction during insertion and removal of the tool tip from the tire to leave an undamaged insert in the hole.
Abstract:
A repair plug comprises an elongate body having a head and a tail made of rubber compositions having different moduli of extension. The head has a higher modulus of extension than the tail and is adapted for engagement by a repair tool. The head may have a hole adjacent the free end thereof in which a member of a repair tool is received to allow insertion of the plug in a puncture hole without folding back on itself.Preferably the head is tapered in the direction leading towards the free end thereof and is made of a rubber composition the hardness of which exceeds that of the tail thereby further facilitating insertion.
