There is provided a radiant brooder system. The radiant brooder system includes a multistage radiant brooder configured to emit radiant heat to a floor area to create a temperature zone. The multistage radiant brooder has a high output setting and a low output setting. The radiant brooder system also includes a black body sensor positioned to gather radiant energy data within the temperature zone, and a processor coupled to the blackbody sensor to receive the radiant energy data therefrom. The processor is operatively coupled to the multistage radiant brooder to control the operation of the multistage radiant brooder to the high output setting, the low output setting, or off in response to the received radiant energy data from the black body sensor.

Excess or unevaporated water is collected in trough and recirculated through the apparatus utilizing a reservoir and a pump. Air passes through the cells and achieves a cooling effect on the air temperature while removing contaminants and/or pollutants. One or more of the apparatuses may be included or installed within a poultry house or structure. One or more apparatuses may be included or installed along with other ventilation components to provide an improved ventilation for such structures or buildings.

A shade apparatus for use in broiler poultry houses can include a plurality of contoured vanes positioned in vertical alignment. Each vane can have first and second opposed lateral sides and is contoured upwardly such that the first lateral side resides below the second lateral side. The vanes are connected by a first plurality of spacers attached to the vanes proximate the first lateral side of the vanes, and a second plurality of spacers attached to the vanes proximate the second lateral side of the vanes. A portion of each vane extends over a horizontal axis defined by the first lateral side of a vane positioned immediately above. The apparatus can include brackets that facilitate mounting of the apparatus over a fan vent of a broiler poultry house and maintain the vanes a predetermined optimal distance from the fan vent.

A method is disclosed for providing a poultry house or other livestock enclosure with an environment favorable for animal growth and unfavorable to propagation of microorganisms which includes starting the grow out cycle with the birds confined to about one-quarter of the enclosure and expanding the area with increasing body weight while keeping the body weight to area at least one pound per square foot; injecting tempered outside air mixed with inside air through an air jet device into said enclosure at a temperature below enclosure air temperature and at a velocity of about 10,000 cubic feet per minute with intermittent operation having a maximum duty factor of about 0.4 and a periodicity of about ten minutes. When outside air temperature is below 30.degree. F. the effective area for egress of air is reduced by closing the poultry house curtains to produce a slight positive pressure during air injection; air is circulated within the house intermittently or continuously by fans mounted near the peak of the roof and directed lengthwise of the house; the duty factor of the air injection process is increased as total body weight increases and volume of injected outside air is reduced for lower outside temperatures.
