摘要:
This invention relates to comfortable ophthalmic devices and methods of producing such devices by treating unhydrated, polymerized ophthalmic lens with a polymeric wetting agent, wherein the ophthalmic lens formulation does not comprise said wetting agent prior to its polymerization.

The present invention provides an aqueous solution for sterilizing and storing ophthalmic devices, preferably a contact lens, made of a hydrogel material, preferably a poly(oxyalkylene)-containing hydrogel material. The solution comprises one or more organic buffer agents, such as a Good buffer or a bis-aminopolyols; an organic tonicity-adjusting agent with multiple hydroxyl groups in an amount sufficient to provide an osmolarity of from about 200 to about 450 mosm/l, wherein the aqueous solution has a pH of from about 5.5 to about 8.5, provided that the aqueous solution include phosphate buffer at a concentration of about 15 mM or less and about 5000 ppm sodium chloride. The present invention also provides a method for sterilizing and storing an ophthalmic device using an aqueous solution of the invention.

A plug-in type contact lens disinfecting apparatus includes a housing having formed therein a pair of receptacles, each having an open top portion for receiving a contact lens therewithin to be sterilized. A removable and releasable cap is provided for closing and sealing the open top portion of each of the receptacles and an electrically-energizable heater heats the receptacles to a preselected temperature for sterilizing contact lenses. An adaptor is provided for engagement with an electrical power source for delivering electrical power therefrom to the heater, and a cap guard is provided for operatively engaging the caps and the adaptor for preventing removal of the caps from the receptacles when the adaptor is engaged with said source of AC power. The apparatus may also include an arrangement for maintaining the contact lens receptacles in an upright position relative to the open tops thereof during engagement of the adaptor with an electrical power source which is oriented at either of two orientations substantially 90.degree. apart.

A compact heat disinfection unit for contact lenses including a waterproof unit having a chamber receiving therein a closed lens case. A heater is disposed in the unit for heating the case. The unit has a retractable blade assembly which folds back into the unit and is electrically coupled to the heater for actuating the same. A push button, accessible from the exterior of the unit, is provided for actuating the heater. The covers of the lens case cannot be removed while heating the same.

An appliance for electrically heated disinfection of contact lenses or similar ojects is provided with a molded plastic housing having a recessed cavity for insertion of a conventional side-by-side horizontal lens storage case containing the lenses immersed in disinfecting liquid, typically saline solution. The cavity has horizontally aligned opposite end openings through the sides of the housing and the openings are located and dimensioned to allow unobstructed sliding passage of the lens case from the cavity so that the lens case will fall by gravitation from the cavity through one of the openings when the housing is rotated 90.degree. to vertically align the openings. The cavity openings thus ensure that the lens case cannot be heated in the appliance in a vertical orientation which could damage the lenses by heated exposure above the level of the disinfecting liquid. The housing further includes a floor wall below the cavity and a cover portion overlying the cavity for preventing vertical access to the lens case and filling the case with saline solution when installed in the cavity. The appliance further includes components for electrically heating the lens case when installed in the cavity. Current is supplied to the electrical circuitry by typical electrical prong terminals projecting from a rear wall of the housing so that the prong terminals can be directly plugged into a conventional household electrical outlet.

A contact lens sterilization device has a case which is generally made of synthetic resin having defined therein: a bottom chamber for receiving the heating element; a middle chamber for receiving a contact lens; a top chamber for receiving an electronic circuit for controlling the heating element therein so as to achieve a better thermal separation between the top chamber and the bottom chamber. A heating element which may be a PTC semiconductor device is secured to the lower surface of the wall separating the middle chamber and the bottom chamber by way of a heat transmission plate and secured by a holding plate and columns appending from the separation wall. The two electrodes of the heating element may be electrically in contact with the heat transmission plate and the holding plate, respectively.

There is disclosed a contact lens disinfector unit for disinfecting contact lenses contained within a lens case. The disinfector unit includes a housing having a forward end wall and a rear end wall and a heating block within the housing. A resistive type heater is engaged with the block and is coupled to an electronic circuit and connector to adapt the unit for connection to a voltage source for causing the heating of a contact lens case in engagement with said block, and the contact lenses contained therein to a sterilizing temperature. The housing forward wall includes an aperture which slidingly receives a drawer having a pair of upstanding spaced apart panels and a contact lens case receiving aperture therebetween. The rear panel is disposed between the housing end walls and is greater in dimension than the forward wall aperture dimension to provide an abutment stop against the foward wall when the drawer is fully displaced from the housing, and also for preventing contact with the heating block and the voltage source connected thereto. The forward panel is also of greater dimension than the forward wall aperture for entirely enclosing the housing when the drawer is fully within the housing. The lens case receiving aperture of the drawer is arranged to be positioned above the heating block when the drawer is fully within the housing to provide surface contact between the undersurface of the lens case and the upper surface of the heating block during the sterilization cycle.
