    摘要: The surface temperature of a coating film after being applied and dried is quickly increased to a thermal treatment temperature in the range of from 60 to 100null C. in a heating zone of a thermal treatment device. Then, the surface temperature of the coating film having been heat-treated is kept at the thermal treatment temperature for a time period in the range of 1 to 60 seconds in a thermal retaining zone. Then, the surface temperature of the coating film having been thermal-retaining-treated is forcefully decreased from the thermal treatment temperature to near a room temperature in a cooling zone. By the three-phase process in the thermal treatment device, the surface of the emulsion layer is prevented from stripping during processing such as slitting, a photothermographic material excellent in photographing performance can be obtained, and productivity is improved.

    摘要: An fountain applicator for applying coating liquid onto a web of paper carried past the applicator, has a coating liquid flow path that includes a curved surface along which a sheet of the coating liquid is flowed to subject the sheet to centrifugal force to cause air entrained in the coating liquid to move away from one side of the sheet that is toward the curved surface, so that the one side is relatively free of entrained air. After being flowed along the curved surface, the sheet of coating liquid is directed toward the web in a free standing jet curtain of coating liquid, to contact the web surface primarily with the one relatively air-free side of the coating liquid sheet to decrease the occurrence of skip coating on the web surface, especially when the web is traveling past the applicator at high speeds. The coating is applied in excess onto the web surface and is metered and leveled to a desired coat weight by a downstream doctor. The downstream doctor may comprise a single metering device, or it may comprise an intermediate metering device followed by a final metering and leveling device.

Alternatively, the polymerization degree of PVA contained in the coating liquid forming the bottom layer is within the range between 1000 and 4000, and an additive used to increase viscosity is added to the coating liquid forming the bottom layer within the range between 0.05% and 0.5% by weight with respect to an amount of PVA contained in the coating liquid forming the bottom layer.

    摘要: A method is taught for curtain coating a liquid composition onto a moving plastic web. The plastic web is partially wrapped around a cylindrical backing roller, the backing roller including a relief patterned area on the surface thereof, the relief patterned area including relieved features and non-relieved features, the relieved features being at least 40% of the relief patterned area, the relief patterned area being circumferential of the backing roller. Providing an electrostatic field at the coating point between the coating liquid and the backing roller, the electrostatic field resulting in an electrostatic force difference at a coating point on the backing roller, the relieved features being of a geometry and depth such that the electrostatic force difference at a coating point does not vary by more than a factor of 10 between the relieved features and non-relieved features. A free-falling curtain of the liquid composition is formed, the free-falling curtain intersecting a moving web at the coating point and within the electrostatic field thereby forming a coating on the moving web and conveying the moving web in contact with the backing roller at a speed sufficient to avoid non-uniformities in the coating resulting from the electrostatic force difference at a coating point, the speed being at least 4.0 meters/second.
