Abstract:
A method of assembly a brush seal between two components having confronting adjacent surfaces, such as the stator and rotor of a gas turbine, comprises providing a slot in one of the components which slot opens through the confronting surface of that component to face the other component. A flexible brush seal element having a plurality of metallic bristles is pushed into the slot so that the free ends of the bristles project from said surface of the one component. The element is then held in position in the slot by means of an anchoring strip pushed into the slot so as to bear on a wall thereof and also on the brush seal element, the anchoring strip typically being of a malleable metal.
Abstract:
A device for holding sintered cams during their binding on a tube by expansion of the tube, including, for each cam, two blocks intended for enclosing the cam in housings complementary to the cam contour. The dimensions of the housings are chosen so that the play between the housings and the largest cam within a predetermined tolerance range is as close to zero as possible by excess, the two blocks being provided to bear against each other whatever the dimensions of the cam within the tolerance range.
Abstract:
A device and method for joining fitting parts provided with a passage opening on hollow profiles through partial expansion of the hollow profiles at the location of the fitting parts is provided. The fitting parts are slid on with the passage openings and are held in position by means of fluid high internal pressure expansion of the hollow profile. The device includes an expanding lance, which can be slid into the hollow profile and exhibits an axial borehole for the purpose of guiding the pressure fluid. The axial borehole is connected to a fluid high pressure generating system and exhibits a cross channel with an outlet for the pressure fluid in the direction of the hollow profile location to be expanded. The shell surface of the expanding lance exhibits sealing elements that are spaced apart and that define the outlet so as to seal axially on both sides against high pressure. To a reliable joining of the fitting parts on hollow profiles even when the hollow profiles exhibit small outer diameters, it is proposed that the expanding lance comprises two separate, aligned oblong components, of which at least one bears the axial borehole which empties freely on an end face near the outlet. The facing ends of the lance components form the cross channel for the axial borehole of the expanding lance. Furthermore, the device includes a drive unit operable to drive the two lance components into respective hollow profile ends, and are supported on an end side during the expansion phase.
Abstract:
A streamlined method for the mass production of connecting rods is disclosed, with particular applicability for anticipated in the production of rods made from powdered metal materials. The method contemplates the rough grinding of a work piece, followed by the use of a single, flexibly tooled boring machine to create crank and pin bores. The work piece is then fracture split, subjected to a final grinding process and honed to specific tolerances without the need for final boring. The entire inventive process may be implemented on a five work station assembly line, thereby reducing the capital investment in machinery and space required by previously known methods.
Abstract:
A method of making a gasket of a variety which includes a generally annular retainer member having an inner and outer diametric extent which define a perimeter of a closed geometric shape, and at least one generally annular seal member formed of an elastomeric material and supported on the retainer member to be compressible intermediate a pair of interface surfaces for providing a fluid-tight seal therebetween. At least a first and a second retainer segment each is provided as extending intermediate a first end and a second end, and as having an inner periphery and an outer periphery. To form the retainer member, the first end of each of the retainer segments is connected to the second end of an adjacent segment such that the inner periphery of each segment defines a portion of the inner diametric extent of the retainer member, with the outer periphery of each segment defining a portion of the outer diametric extent of the retainer member. The seal member then is attached to the retainer member so as to formed a continuous ring of elastomeric material which extends along the perimeter of the retainer member.
Abstract:
A sheet-metal rocker arm formed by the steps of punch-pressing a sheet of metal member to form a blank having a predetermined shape and a through-hole, of subjecting the blank to a bending process based on pressing to form a pair of substantially parallel side wall sections and a connection section for connecting the widthwise edges of the both side wall sections and to form at least one pair of circular holes in the both side wall sections at locations in alignment, of deforming the middle of the connection section in the thickness direction to form an engagement portion on one side of the connection section such that the engagement portion is recessed from the other portion of the connection section, and of forming on the other side of the connection section a bulge section, trapezoidal in cross section, which protrudes in an embanked-shape as the engagement portion is formed, whereby the widthwise edges of the middle of the bulge section corresponding to the top edge of the trapezoidal shape exist on the widthwise inside of the both widthwise edges of the engagement portion.

Abstract:
A method for separating a one-piece connecting rod into a cap and a rod includes forming diametrically opposed notches in the connecting rod bore to define a fracture plane that is substantially parallel to the bore central axis. One portion of the connecting rod is clamped to hold it substantially fixed with respect to the other portion of the connecting rod. An oscillatory load is applied to the other of the portions in a direction that is substantially perpendicular to the fracture plane to develop fatigue cracks in the vicinity of the notches. The fatigue cracks are propagated through the connecting rod by the oscillatory load until the connecting rod is separated into the cap and the rod. An apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A method of manufacturing a camshaft used in an internal combustion engine. The method of manufacturing the camshaft produces a camshaft which has reduced weight and added wear resistance at a lobe of the camshaft. The camshaft is manufactured to provide increased efficiency of the internal combustion engine. The method of making the camshaft includes mixing wear resistant material with a base material and metering the mixture into a rotating die. The rotating die rotates at a predetermined speed and forces the wear resistant material to the outer surface of the lobes.
